Best Alps routes

In August, We'll be heading from Le Havre to Siena, and I want to take a good route across the Alps. I expect to cross over somewhere between Grenoble and Turin. Would appreciate some recommendations for roads to take vaguely in that area.

Thanks for the recommendation Vendome. I will be making my own route, but maps never really convey the most scenic/best-for-biking roads, and I don't want to find out later, that a 20 mile detour either side of my chosen route would have given me a spectacular journey!

Michelin maps do give a good idea, just look for the green snake. If it's not a really good riding road at least the scenery will be nice.

IIWY I'd look to go N91, Col Galbier, Col Mont Cenis etc

Assietta Ridgeway

If you like gravel you might want to check this out. It is just between Grenoble and Turin and is an old military road, apperently quite busy on weekends with enduros and 4x4's but alright during the week in good weather conditions. The road is not in Garmin CN 8 but if you are interested I could look for waypoints as I have seen them somewhere on a german enduro site. The ridgeway itself is 36 km long and does go over the Colle dell'Assietta (2472m), the Testa dell'Assietta (2567m), Colle delle Finestre (2176) and the Colle Basset (2424m). Sorry about the picture quality, they are quick scans from a guidebook. The 2 blue routes (Fort de la Turra, Monte Jafferau) on the map are meant to be a bit more difficult than the Assietta. Further south there would also be the Maira Stura Ridgeway and the Varaita Maira Ridgeway, both similar old military roads.

I agree, a good map is enough for staying on tarmac, but for the more exciting stuff guide books are essential. These routes are from the 'Denzel Verlag, Mottoradtouren Ostalpen', available sadly in German only.
