I am always searching for the best base layers and had up until now considered Icebreaker the best

However

Somehow or other I fell through a YouTube rabbit hole of arctic survival and some Latvian special forces bloke was blathering on about mesh undershirts so I had a google and found these from a Norwegian company called Brynje
Obviously trapping air is the key a bit like grandads old string vest

I fell a bit further down the internet shopping wormhole and also noticed that they did these

This is a fantastic heavy weight merino top but with a mesh type lining to trap more air

I can say that the quality is amazing and makes Icebreaker feel a bit cheap and I can also vouch for how warm and cozy it is.

Not cheap for the merino or indeed for just a mesh shirt but bloody good and well recommended

I'm not surprised it made the Icebreakers feel a bit cheap! For twice the price, it should be at least twice as good.......

I think it is but it isnt that much more and with the added mesh type liner ...

Icebreaker 260 weight is £125 and these are thicker still

There were deals on Sports Pursuit recently, don't know if they're still available...

I’ve an Acclima wool net long sleeve base layer (fancy name for a string vest) that is amazingly warm. Too warm for active wear unless it arctic cold, so ideal for on the bike or camping. I wore it for a week on a recent winter campervan trip to Europe. Completely useless without something reasonably heavy or wind resistant over the top though. I picked mine up in a bargain bin in Nordic Outdoor in Keswick. https://www.nordicoutdoor.co.uk/aclima-mens-woolnet-light-crewneck/, and yeah it makes your torso look just like that models’.

Also look at Woolpower stuff. Their 200 base layer stuff is brilliant over the string vest. https://www.woolpower.uk/shop/crewneck-200/

At full price Icebreaker are pricey, IMO. But there are always deals to be found, and use the ML 10% price beat to make it even better (y)

I got 3 different isobaa layers from them and they are quality. The 320gsm is the bollocks.

I’ve bought icebreaker in Canada for skiing, but used it on the bike and I’m pleased with it, especially as it’s been 30%
