hi
im going down to benedorm in a few weeks, im getting the ferry to st malo then riding to santander to meet a few mates because they didnt want to ride through france, has anyone done the coastal route to santander? or any route, any tips or good campsites along the way or good places to see?

The autoroute in Spain once you leave France is a great ride.....weaving fast roads through small hills....a great autoroute ride for the first part...after that normal autoroute stuff applies. Any campsite along the coastal route will be good. Les landes region is forrested and any campsite there will be of a good standard.as will the beaches You can`t really go wrong. Further south you`ll find great campsites at Bidart, south of Biarritz, and on down towards St Jean de Luz. This is a French tourist region due to the excellent beaches and warm gulf stream water.

I entirely understand the not wanting to ride thru France from your mates, most of it is boring especially in the flat coasty bits.

Anyway, Biaritz is full of campsites and the French really do know how to camp.

Theres a campsite in a place called Comillas west of Santander that i've used, personally my recommended route would be to stay in the Picos when you leave Santander (this is more or less the route we did 2 weeks ago)... Then head south on the N502, the road is unbelievably ace. Stop in Harrera somewhere around the middle of spain for peanuts, then down through granada to Almunecar (nice little spannish seaside town), then across to Benidorm.

The place in the Picos is brilliant lapisa.co.uk and the place in Almunecar (not sure i should publisise this little gem) is english owned, secure 2 bedrooms and a resteraunt downstairs... nice, private pool too... you'll have to pm for that one lol.....

Thats part of the route i did with Bilco this Easter just gone.

Word of warning... Spanish campsites, secure everything...

Enjoy your trip.

Campsites St Malo to Santander

If you arrive in St Malo and just need somewhere to crash there is a camp site in St Malo.

If you need to put a few miles after arrival head for Saumur.

There is a camp site called Les Val des Vins. I have the GPS co ords but I've just checked on Google maps and its there.

The camp site boasts the cleanest loos in France.

They may be correct.

There is a nice pool, a decent restaurant and a Boulangerie within easy walking distance. Go the the entrance of the campsite turn left, walk to the main road, pluck up courage to walk on the verge, swear at the trucks for being too close or plough throught stinging nettles, head over the bridge, playing chicken run with the trucks again and on your left ahead is an ace boulangerie. The croissants could win prizes and stock up for your journey down with Pain Au Raisin and Custard Flan.

I live in Guernsey and plan on popping in there in our next caming trip.

Beware the mosquitos, we forgot to take repellant. They are vampire like. But I guess thats the joy of camping.

We just head for the motorway and follow that like sheep to the Spanish border. Its boring but efficient, there are loos and places to fill up on a Sunday and you can maintain a decent speed.

Or take the scenic route down. If you find that you can sell the route because every time I try it you end up taking forever to get anywhere and worrying about running out of fuel or light.

Depending on your daily run you should be able to make Biarritz in a day from there, or just head for one of the many Campsites to the west after Bordeax.

Have a good trip.

JR :)

Campsite Gironde Estuary

We stayed at a cracking campsite last year called La Teddy on the Lac de Lacanau (not too far from Bordeaux). Take the ferry over the estuary at Blaye.
