Which is the best free email software to go for?

I want something that is very similar to Outlook and, if possible, whose files are compatible with Outlook (i.e. so I can just drag and drop from the Inbox to a folder on a USB Memory Stick, and then drag and drop from the stick to Outlook when i get home).

The two leading contenders seem to be Eudora and Thunderbird.

None - move to the cloud ......

I used to battle to keep things ii synch across work and home computers (multiple at each location) and constant upgrades to Outlook or computer rebuilds and carting memory sticks.

Just over a year ago, I bought myself a new netbook and was struggling to decide between email programs, going open source, installing Microsoft or what.

I expanded my search to online services and took a good look at gMail - which is what I finally decided on. I use it to fetch all of the mail from 6 different domains that I own and once you get used to the way you file and tag it's really much better than outlook as you can tag items with multiple tags instead of just filing in one folder.

Big bonus is that it works on my iPhone and iPad and stores all of my contacts and calendar which is now fully in synch across anything that I can fire up a browser on ...........

Its the way of the future - data in the cloud, devices to access it.

i find IMAP gmail does pretty much all i need across multiple computers and an iphone.

action made on any device is replicated everywhere.

Gmail is the way to go.

Google sync works perfectly for me on the iphone - and you can turn off conversation style inbox in gmail now too.

Google Mail. The End.

I haven't used an application for my mail for about 5 years now, and the message at the bottom of the page says "You are currently using 1855MB (24%) of your 7504MB.", but it's all instantly searchable.

The only problem really with this (I use Yahoo Mail BTW) is that they tell you that they will scan your mails to help in their research...

How much have you got to hide?

That's on the other 2 accounts :augie

Seriously though, that's the drawback.

Remember PGP?

Thanks for your comments guys.

I'll have to look at gmail closer and I'd never heard of Dreammail so I'll check it out.

Just in case you are worried about gmail being an online only thing (let's say you have an intermittent connection (eg on holiday in hotel with poor wifi)) you can set gmail to offline mood and it downloads your mails to your puter so you don't need to sit on expensive wifi in foreign lands.

Top tip - turn offline mode on BEFORE you go abroad so all your old emails are already downloaded. You can select how far back in time you want to download.

Installed EM Mail on my netbook last week, initially it appeared very good, then win7 system lock up followed by full system restore to bring it back to life.
leave well alone..

seems to be chinese in origin (as it only supports English and Chinese ) which makes you wonder what else it does?

oh - you think the govt have hijacked it and incorporated some tracker that lets them know everything about you ? :mmmm

bet they're really interested:augie.

btw what do you think google does ?

Been using Eudora for about 6yrs now, finally got the paid version, (gets rid of the adverts), simple program but I'm not sure about the drag and drop system, never used or even thought about it.

Thanks for all your replies peeps. I've tried all the options, plus some more, mentioned. Out of them all the Gmail was nearer to what i wanted but I still found it easier to do what i wanted with Outlook. In the end I stuck with the devil I knew and went for Outlook, despite it not being free

Thanks again.
