Daughter (17) needs a new laptop this week...her requirements are -
  • fast
  • good storage (photos, videos etc)
  • able to play video
  • wireless enabled

I've looked at dell, amazon, pc world etc but am bewildered at the choice

Which one would you buy if you were buying this week :nenau

Any of the slim line ssd models like ACER, if she needs more space get an external drive.

So she only needs it for gaming, photos video and social networks?

Tell her she's going to have to work and save up for it.

On the other hand

If she can convince you (and show you by example) that having a new laptop will help her get straight A's and B's in her coursework and A levels then get her a MACBook Pro. She also needs to swear on her life she look after it, keep it password protected, locked away and clean of food, drink, snot and spittle.

MacBook Air, I think you should be able to get a students discount.

She's paying 80% of the price :thumb

I'm doing the same search this week and I think I've narrowed it down to this Acer

Reason - Windows 8 but with touchscreen, DVD included and other specs seem plenty good enough to cope with most tasks. Gaming might be an issue but it's not something I'm worried about.

Yep, the Applestore offer student discounts and evn parents can get the discount if they give details of their kid's place of education (or at kleast they used to offer this)

MacBook Air.

If she's worth it. ;)

The aluminium body is bulletproof (well, almost). It's ultra portable. Nine hour battery runtime on 11" model, twelve hours on 13", so no need to carry a charging brick around. Solid state disc drive is both fast and ultra reliable. Decent operating system so no need for anti-virus thingumebobs.

Even the base configuration will have a life time of six or more years. The Dell is certainly cheaper but with a short life and typical Windows management problems, not to mention Windows 8.
