this has probley been asked a million times but what is the best engine oil for my 04 dakar.

bloody hell an oil thread that's not for a boxer :D

Only stuff to avoid is anything with an ec rating as it has friction modifiers that can make the wet clutch slip. Apparently. :rob

I Use Silkolene Super 4 10w40, Have done for the last 12000 miles with no problems.

Pretty much any 10w40 will work tho, i just buy the stuff that the local bike shop sells.

thanks

thanks, the reson i am asking is that i have owned my dakar for a few years now and always had the dealer do the service, i know my way round a bike and can sevice it my self no problem. but when i bought it it had 10'000 miles and every receipt since new. at the time not thinking rite,(i blame the medication) i thought i would keep it with a full bmw service history, so many of hundred pounds later (and new medication) i am going to sevice it myself and just keep the receipts of the parts theres no differance i am just a few quid better off.:JB

Rock Oil Guardian semi synthetic 10/40 is JASO MA rated, so no wet clutch problems. A pal of mine has used this in his 650 Dakar for a few years, I run my Triumph Tiger 1050 on it. It does the job just fine.

If anyone near to St Helens needs any, contact me. £14.00 for 4litre carton. (buyer collects)

dunno about a few quid better of, more like a few hundred.

Only services my bike has had at a dealer was the 600 mile service which was free and the 6000 whch was expensive, around £200 if i remember correctly. Made a decision just after that service to do it myself, I'm never selling the bike (long story) so i'm not bothered about resale value or service stamps, i do keep a recored of services done and all receipts tho.

Just bought the parts i need to do the 24k service for £60, which includes oil and coolant :thumb2 Only extras may be new shims for the valves but i won't know that until i get the bike apart. :blast What i should have done there was made a note of what shims were in last time and bought enough to cover any movement either way, i'll do that this time.

Only thing i haven't bought is the fuel filter as its around £60 by itself . I'll replace that when it starts to cause problems and not before.

Try motorworks for a service kit ( 2 spark plugs, oil filter, o ring and a few copper washers) They are around £20. If your doing a 6k service it should only cost £50 to do by yourself :thumb2

same here wont ever be selling my bike, but like to keep a record looks good and something to bum about to mates, i have had loads of jap bikes over the years. this is my first bm and theres just somthing about it that i want to keep it maybe it's because i havent came off it yet. i have had it just over 3 years now i think and the only thing i have had to replace apart from paying for seviceing is set of tyres new battery last week and chain starting to look abit worse for wear, oh almost for got had to replace rear brake caliper, went on fire and melted, but some how the dealer payed out for it after constant phoning and complaining. it was just after a service they done and renewed all break fluid i gues they hadnt bleed it rite. idiots.
anyway thanks for the advice. just orderd that kit
