dunno about a few quid better of, more like a few hundred.
Only services my bike has had at a dealer was the 600 mile service which was free and the 6000 whch was expensive, around £200 if i remember correctly. Made a decision just after that service to do it myself, I'm never selling the bike (long story) so i'm not bothered about resale value or service stamps, i do keep a recored of services done and all receipts tho.
Just bought the parts i need to do the 24k service for £60, which includes oil and coolant

Only extras may be new shims for the valves but i won't know that until i get the bike apart.

What i should have done there was made a note of what shims were in last time and bought enough to cover any movement either way, i'll do that this time.
Only thing i haven't bought is the fuel filter as its around £60 by itself

. I'll replace that when it starts to cause problems and not before.
Try motorworks for a service kit ( 2 spark plugs, oil filter, o ring and a few copper washers) They are around £20. If your doing a 6k service it should only cost £50 to do by yourself
