Gents, I have read many notes on this site for getting power to the beak and would like some help.
firstly I have a smart phone with GPS which i would like to mount to the front of the bike 1200GS, can I just use the cigarette adapter lead that came with the phone and connect it to the headstock plug with the bmw socket which i have? or do I run a piggy back auxiliary socket from the one under the seat?

Also can you run an auxilary socket from the headstock lead without causing any problems?

I aslo use my Ipod on the bike with normal ear phones, which is a drag,I assume the best option so that I could listen to the Ipod and instructions from the phone gps would be an Autocom, I see they are doing deals at the moment :)

Any comments/guidance would be appreciated.

Don't know if it's ideal for you, but I use an accessory socket (wired from the battery) which is mounted on a dash extension from Nippy Norman. I kept the din socket and use an adaptor for standard cigarette type plugs if needed. I have an Autocom, and can use it for phone if necessary, but mainly use it to talk with my pillion, or listen to an ipod for boring motorway miles.
Wiring the socket direct to the battery was fairly easy as I have skinny arms and could manage to run the wires through without removing the tank.

Lots of different questions here, I think.

(a) There are two to power outlets at the front of a 1200GS.

(1) The (optional) regular socket, mounted on the offside beak

(2) A spare socket, blanked off on delivery, which dangles behind the oil cooler headstock.

(b) Socket (1) - if fitted - can be used to power anything from a phone, to a heated jacket to a GPS. In fact anything electrical up to 5 amps. Why 5 amps? Simply because that is the limit of the socket. It is usually a BMW (Din) type socket (like the one onder the seat) so you will either need a converter, if you want to run something that uses a cigarette charger type plug, or chop the plug off and fit a BMW type plug. The converters are easy to make or buy one reday made from Nippy Nornan.

Socket (2) is usually used just to power a GPS. I assume it could be used to power other electrical items but I do not know what amperage it will support. I guess it is probably not above 5 amps, maybe a lot less, if its purpose is to power a GPS.

Automcom, or the very similar devices made by other companies (like Starcom) work fine. They can be powered easily. Lots of threads on where to put them / how to power them.

I use an iGo to power / charge multiple electrical items from one socket. An excellent piece of kit. Again, a search will turn up several threads.
