best way of lashing down a GS on trailer

whats the best way to lash down a GS on a trialer, the last time i did it i used slings over the handelbar grips, but had to remove the hand gards
anyone used the engine bars or engine to compress the suspension
nervous about pulling down on grips incase it knacks up the heated grips

all suggestions welcome

I think that it depends what the trailer is like.

If the trailer has some sort of well into which the front wheel sits, I would strap the front wheel to the well so that it cannot bounce upwards. The well will then stop fore/aft movement. Strap the back wheel similarly.

To stop the bike falling over, I then strap from the right-hand pillion footpeg ring, over the saddle, and lash on the l/h side of the trailer. Same for the l/h pillion peg to the r/h side of the trailer. These two straps do not have to be massively tight (you don't have to crush the suspension!!) but you should avoid 'hook' straps as there will be a disaster if they unhook (happened to me!). I now use carabiners instead of hooks.

Have a look at THIS THREAD too. It started off as a question about Ratchet Straps, but there's loads of good info in it too.

Personally, I wouldn't ratchet it down on the crashbars - Both of mine had cracks in them and I can't help but wonder whether it was tying it down on a trailer that caused it. If you are using hooks instead of carabiners, definately hold each in place with a cable tie. They're cheap as chips and will put your mind at rest.

Much as Greg says, lash the front wheel into the front support if it exists, I always cross lash mine, so back of bike is anchored to supports by front wheel and front pulled back to the mounts at the rear of the bike - this makes it a lot more stable, and I always use Karabiners after I had a steel hook snap on me as I tightened the strap (Ouch!)
