Hi Guys

just a quick heads up on leaving valuables out at service station stops in Spain.

4 of us stopped for fuel and a bite to eat at a small station 20 k south of Madrid last week just off the motorway. When we returned to our bikes a guy was stood on his mobile about 30 feet from us. Suspicious i thought but again he was away from us.
Friend of mine put his bumbag across his seat and was putting his jacket on, we got chatting for a few mins about the route and looking at the map on the next bike to his.

We think the guy on the phone must have casually walked past us slipped the bumbag off the seat and got into a waiting car parked next to our bikes which had a driver in ready to drive away.
We never suspected the car and presumed it was parked up, but we think that they must have been in contact about what was left out for easy pickings while we were distracted.
To say it caused a problem was an understatement, his Passport, 1K in euro's, credit cards, licence, Police report, Madrid traffic etc.
Just beware and don't drop your guard.

Have I read this right, he left his bum bag containing his Passport, €1,000 in cash, credit cards, licence etc on the seat of his bike while you were chatting

When I'm 'away' the only time those things leave my side is when I'm either in the shower or in bed....

If you were from Yorkshire the bum bag would be waterproof for taking in the shower and with a chain to cuff it to your leg when in bed !

I'm guessing the inventory of lost property is for insurance purposes:rolleyes:

€1000 in cash:blast

Reads like the bumbag was on the seat, immediately behind the fella - while he chatted with his mates.

A harsh lesson in security, but could happen to many people and should perhaps be read as the OP intended "We were naive - please take something from our experience"..... rather than lumping into them.

Been there , T-shirt , only the Kreiga bag was actually attached to me-ish , but no longer attached 60 miles down the road. Taking the piss is harsh, but only funny for those not in the same situation. Shit happens, as you too have all experienced. Whilst my gear wasn't 'nicked' I'm sure I felt no better at the time than your mate does/did now/then. It's the loss that counts, not so much how it was lost.

+1 totally agree with you. Unfortunately not all of us are perfect, and can make mistakes no matter how hard we try not to. Thanks to the OP for informing us of his bad experience,as a lot of us are on are travels this time of year.

Thieves are everywhere, especially popular tourist areas. Even in the UK. Sorry to read your friend got caught out by one.
I travel solo quite a bit and stopping for a pee or getting fuel is the worst time as I don't want to lug my helmet and tank bag into the toilet / shop. Like your friend I use a bum-bag for valuables & it's a reminder that it shouldn't be left at any time.

On a positive note, I once left that bumbag on the seat & rode off. Amazingly, the person who picked it up, returned it to the cafe who used the ICE contact in my phone to call my sister to let me know they had my bag, purse, phone and house keys :thumb2
