Strangely enough I have just spent all day in the studio with a product designer shooting some of the products he has designed. I couldn't bring myself to mention the fact that some don't think things are designed, it is the poor blokes life's work. Not even vaguely important in the grand scheme of things, but important non the less. Evolutionary design, is usually the result of success. Apple don't change their designs substantially, as many of their products are design icons( that other manufacturers copy). VW has continually carefully redesigned the Golf, so it is not significantly different to the last model, as evolutionary design keeps the previous model desirable and a good bet at resale time. A 10 year old Golf still looks really good. Harley, dare I say it, have been very clever. Classic lines, and with the latest models half decent handling, braking and modern technology. I think Harleys' Design Department is doing a good job. That new Road Glide with it's twin headlamps has moved the design on from the 50's to the 70's- I love it!

I call "rubbish" on your comparison to the Golf.

If you put a new Golf side-by-side with a ’76, with no badges showing, you’d be hard-pressed to see the heritage. The new one is 7” Wider, 22” longer and 50% Heavier. The only similarity is four wheels and the general layout.

Look at my picture of a Harley from the 50’s and that one from 2002. They’re nearly twins.

I can imagine the conversation in the Harley “design” office……

“Wadda’ya think Chuck? Shall we design a new fuel tank?”
“ Na, Hank, what’s wrong with the old one?”
“ So how do we justify our existence?”
“Tell you what Hank? Let’s move the tank mounts 1/8” of an inch? And a new paint scheme? That way our loyal customers will be getting a new bike……….”

“Right on, Bro…now you’re talking.”

…it may be tweaked…or re-engineered as legislation demands…but it ain’t designed.

There are some “real designers” out there…but there’s a lot of pretentious shit put forward as “design” when it’s just re-working the wheel……

If you want a more modern VW that's like the original Golf in styling, nothing newer than a 2005 pre-facelift Polo will match its styling. After that they are all bigger, squarer and heavier.

I am sorry Pingu, the original 50's Harley you have show is beautiful (and smaller) than the 2002 (retro designed) model that has tried to ape its grandfather. The original just looks right. Which is where good design comes into play. Proportions and lines are so important in design, even small tweaks can change the character. I like Melch's old Roadking because of the way he customised it with a considered eye. It looks good, ( without the screen, pillion and backrest, yes, I know Dave) as so many others that have been customised, look worse (than the original). It is the same with professional designers (often under instruction from senior management), they don't always get it right. Take the Ducati 916 and what followed! I would not have wanted to be the chief designer in charge of updating what is arguably the most beautiful sports bike of the 1990's.

Only on until the girls have had a go. They have been asking if they can sit shotgun over the Christmas Holiday. The pillion and rest are off at the moment, but it is only a 5 minute job. I am keeping the screen on until the warm wind blows.
