Bike cut out...

Was coming back from Terry's GPS ride on Sunday which was around a 200 mile round trip for me in the rain when around 1/2 mile from home the bike suddenly cut out on me, locking its back wheel on greasy surface. Thid left me to find my way across a line of moving traffic with the clutch pulled in. I tried to start it but it just turned over and sounded clunky. I started to push it home and randomly tried it but to no avail. There was no warning lights and I had 10 litres of fuel left.

When I got home I rang BMW who despatched a tehnician (for cars). In the meantime I tried to start it again and it fired up  I still let the tech visit and he changed the fuel pump thingy. When he removed mine there was no water ingress past the seal. Rode it 130 miles after and all seems ok.

I thought the controller was a total failure and once gone that was it, have others who've had this problem bikes started again before it was changed?

Incidentally I asked the tech if he had diagnostic eqpt and he said for the cars yes, bikes no as there is some software conflict, thought they could just run it as a seperate program. I need to get it to a dealer to see if the problem is registered in its brain.

My Bike started cutting out a couple of weeks ago. Bike would cut out but restarted without any problem. Took it to NoG who diagnosed Cam Shaft Position Sensor failure. Was shown the offending item, it was broken in half. Sensor replaced as a good will gesture(bike is 10 months out of warrenty). Bike is running better than ever.

Get it to your dealer and have it checked out for the above.

When my fuel pump controller went it did it intermittently at first, lasted a couple of days like this before finally giving up the ghost for good. There was also no sign of water damage on the underside of it.

I had camshaft position sensor failure too, although it was down to the Woodruff key shearing rather than the sensor itself, which meant the ignition just didn't know where it was! Its under the alternator cover on the front of the engine.

Sorted by dealer free of charge outside warranty, but did happen immediately after they'd had it for gearbox oil leak......... (let's not open that can o' worms again!)

Where is said thingy? I am currently trying to diagnose a problem.

The CamShaft position sensor is mounted on the rear of the RH cylinder, below the throttle body. It is the black plastic item secured by three screws. It is immediatly inboard of the cylinder head.

(sorry, can't do photo's)

It is NOT under the alternator cover!

Only passing on what my dealer told me........Woodruff key that sheared was behind the alternator cover, so perhaps I got the sensor bit incorrect. Certainly brought the bike to a shuddering halt! Unless it was a crankshaft position sensor maybe?

Crankshaft sensor is on top of engine (behind cover). Its secured by a single screw. No woodruff key in sight. The failure of either sensor could cause the engine to cut out as the ECU would not know the position of major components of the engine.

If an engine cuts out and does not restart/run, I would suggest fuel pump controller. If it restarts and appears to work as normal then cuts out at low speeds/RPMs I would suggest that it is one of the sensors.

So the throttle position sensor?

Mine was the Key switch not fully switching on. Made a point of turning key firmly on and never happened since. Dealer checked and all ok.:)

Twice at speed and in the dark......

When my fuel pump controller failed last weekend the bike would start when left for a while, then cut out again. This got the RAC man really exited - thought he had fixed it - but NO!
Recovered back to BMW - waiting for parts. (Updated???????)

Ive posted a similar thread Total shutdown while riding, did everything just switch off, display blank?
I was chugging up a steep slope fully loaded, could that have been a sensor? The engine was struggling a bit:(
