A great friend of mine has offered the use of a GS for 2 weeks in october, will my UK bike insurance cover me using his bike. If not, does anyone know a policy/company that will ?
If he's a great friend get him to put you on his policy, my great friends do, I cover them when they are over here. They need an international license whilst over here though, you may need the same......
Speak to your friend and have him try his insurance and offer to cover the increase in premuim, but ensure tha they are okay with your International Drivers Licence first. Depending on where in the USA you friend lives, it could be very easy or very hard (read Masshole)
In addition, if your friend has 2 bikes and you plan to go out together, check that you will both be covered if riding at the same time, I know that this can be a problem.
If not, you could call progressive Insurance )(www.progressive.com) who are one of the biggest insurance companies in the USA. They will offer some advice I am sure and you will enjoy a great customer service compared to the disaster that is UK insurance companies.
Bro and I are going over in October to Virginia. My good buddy Dave has a 1150 gs which he will be riding and 2 650 gs`s which he has kindly offered us the use of. Didn`t want to overdo the generosity offered so thought I`d sort the insurance out, but I don`t think I`ll be able to use my bike policy for the US.
Will be riding the Skyline Drive, Shenadoah Mountains and into North carolina.
I`ve hired cars on my UK driving licence so I wouldn`t imagine we need an International licence.
We use Dave Grist at HC-Travel as well. Make sure you take out the "Uninsured Motorist" supplementary cover. The only time we have ever had to claim, guess what, we ran into an illegal immigrant with no brake lights. Insurance paid in full. Added a line or two to the diary entry, but didn't spoil the trip.
I went and bought a bike, got a temporary tag and rode for 5 weeks then shipped it from JFK to UK.
I had trouble finding anyone who would insure a brit on a US reg bike with no local license or address... thanks for the tips in the thread above.
I used Michael Mandell , NYC ( you will have to do a Google search)
They were a broker who used an insurance company out west called something like Bergman (sorry for being vague). All this can be found on the net. Sorry I haven't had time to research this again for this post.
