I've got a Ducati that i need to ship over here to Aus by sea, not air.
I can get it crated and cleaned etc but i need to use a reliable / cheap agent.

I've looked over on Horizons unlimited and there is no info of any use.

When i was in the UK i found some shippers in the reading area - i think - who were very good for bikes - but i've lost the info.

I've found this lot - but don't know anything about them http://www.eliteshipping.co.uk/cont...p?categoryId=24
Anyone ?

Any info appreciated

Hi guys,

Give Terry at Expedition Freight a call. I used him to get my Landy to & from Oz and not only did he sort it for a good price but he also gave me heaps of useful advice (he's also a really nice guy to talk to too :thumb ).

One thing I will say though is that getting anything into & out of Oz is very expensive! The unions rule the roost over there and you get slapped with different handling charges all the way down the line.... IIRC the handling charges (moving container from wharf, unpacking, etc...) cost me nearly twice what it cost to ship the container half way around the world!!!!

BTW - If you talk to Terry, feel free to tell him that Mark Phillips sent ya.

HTH

Mark.

PS... If you look at his photo galley, there's a few of my Landy on there. :D

....Some suggestions:

> Ask for a groupage quote,
> Would suggest you also try the major shipping lines (Maersk etc)
> Ensure rate is inclusive of all charges, including duty/vat and or taxes
> If your planning on bring it back to the UK, keep all proof of export or you will need to import it all over again, (Re-import back via British Returns Process)
> Suggest you ask the agent if they can advise on temp import process into Aus, might be cheaper than full import, depends.

....Best of luck!

BTW - If you're shipping into Oz, you have to get permission from DOTARS before you ship it!!!

Get onto the DOTARS web site as there's plenty of info there about it... There's also a load of things you have to do with customs, not difficult, just time consuming.

How old is the Duke Phil ? I presume you have owned it a while and it is still in UK?

If it is over 15 years old there are different rules for the importation than for newer stuff.

If it is a recent model eg 999, try asking a dealer if you could have a left over delivery crate after their next batch arrives. You may even be able to adapt an existing crate to take a classic. I shall be asking SPC BMW nicely when the time to emigrate comes, they have already agreed to let me have an empty R1200GS crate when I need one as they get them regularly, top people :thumb .

For any bike import into Oz it needs to be over 1 year old or you will get hammered for import duty.

I shall hopefully be shipping my GS with me in my sea container when I emigrate next year :D (courtesy of RAN) as the import fees will be less than the loss I would take on selling in the UK and buying again in Oz, plus I know my bikes history etc. The sea container will be paid for regardless so I may as well squeeze the GS in with all my other possessions. I may even get a KPH reading speedo fitted as the stock UK dual MPH/KPH has a very small KPH scale on it. The way the speed limits are, I would be better off having a scale I can see clearly especially with all the overzealous speed cops about.

If you trawl around the britishexpat site for australia under motorcycles you will find enough info on it and recommended shippers. :thumb

Phil

Just aword of caution here, if you are intending to use the vehicle here in Aus and maybe in the future be able to sell it you need to do a few things first. You can import it without any compliance if you atre not going to use it on the road however if as I am almost certain that you are intending to use it as transport make sure you have permission to import it before you import it. This is easily done but the authorities take a very dim view if you don't. This consists of proof of ownership and use and the models build compliance which is generally not an issue on recent bikes. Once you have this paper work your agent can release it for inspection here with all the correct paper work to allow you to rego it. The other warning is make sure you have documentay proof of it value here so when they GST on entry & stamp duty it on registration you keep the costs down, I got a letter from my local in my case Yamaha dealer which saved me $800 in GST alone.
If you want to talk about the process PM me you phone number and I will walk you through it with the paper work in front of me. Its easy enough but if you do it wrong you end up with an unregisterable bike.

ok - guys - thanks for the replies.

The full story is that the bike is a 600 monster - and its Tina's, not mine.
We bought it in the UK for £500 6 months before i came over. I've got the bill of sale and UK logbook - but no MOT.
Its got a dented tank and its a bit corroded - so its really not worth much in the UK - but Tina wants it over here - so i guess i'll go through the motions - an equivalent bike here would cost more than the shipping and importation costs to get it here.
Its completely standard to UK spec - i don't think it would need anything for AUS rego apart from a rear tyre.
Its now sat at the sister-in-laws in the garage - but they've just got there fiull immigration visa thru and they'll be over in March.

I'll get the import approval before i move on it to be shipped from the UK.
Got a price of £450 to ship it over from www.eliteshipping.co.uk

Roger - i'll be in touch if i get stuck
