got a bit of a problem here, may be nothing. when i first take the bike out for a ride i start it up a let it stand for a minute or so then off i go. what's happening is, the last 2 times i've been out, the bike is surging power as if you had the choke on full (on an older bike of course). just came back and was at roundabout and the surge came on and i had to really hold the brakes to stop it from going into the back of a car. once i've rode the bike for a while, the power surge stops and everything is fine. also, the hazard warning light on the handle bar is on permanent. this is with no accessories plugged into the socket either. help would be appreciated instead of going to the dealers wasting time. cheers all.

If you mean the light in the hazard warning button, then its supposed to be on all the time.

Puzzled about the surging. You've no need (and are advised not to )warm the bike up before moving off, but I cant see why that would cause surging. Is your throttle "sticky" or catching on the handguard? Is it really surging or just not releasing?

no throttle not sticking,not caught on handgaurd,bikes wanting to go,when i dont want it to :eek: will give it one more ride out then off to dealers

haz warning switch light should go out (I think )

on my early 04 the haz warding light on the switch powers down on its own ie will remain on for a couple of minutes before powering down, I guess it is connected to the aux power end of the loom. Your surging sounds bad !

Warming up

Someone has already raised the point that in the handbook one is told not to run the bike in neutral to warm it up - although I also cannot see why that would produce the problem. But why do some people run their bikes on the stand before getting on and going away? It was the right technique before fuel injection etc; but it serves no useful purpose nowadays and just pollutes the immediate area - which in my case is often the terrace in front of the bar!

Wouldnt even bother with another ride - problems dont usually cure themselves and even if they did, you dont know the cure is permanent. Surging is danderous - I'd have the dealer pick the bike up.

Thread hijack - warming up engines

I'm not sure it's ever been the right technique regardless of fuel delivery system.

My understanding is that with any engine (car or bike) you ride/drive off asap in order to get the engine up to operating temperature as quickly as possible.

There are also further issues specific to the Boxer engine;

1. It's air cooled, so, without an adequate air flow over the engine local hot spots may develop on an engine at standstill.

2. It's shaft drive - even in neutral, with a cold and dragging clutch the back wheel will rotate. Without any load on the drive train the shaft is free to 'slap' around (tech. term!) with all the back lash in the drive train which is never a good thing for any shaft drive system.

Just my 2p's worth :)
