Booked the Ferry to Bilbao for June with two friends but only have 4 days. Do I go to the Picos or the Pyrenees. Don't think I'll have time to do both. I have read all the threads but am no closer to deciding out of the two - not that I need to this early but I may book the hotels up as the friends don't want to camp.

me to on the third or fourth cant remember now but after reading lonely planet spain etc im def heading pyre

Picos is scenic BUT the roads are windy and narrow, I got very worried about meeting a truck or bus head-on on the wrong side of the road, which they have to use to get round the corner. Chancey for fast riding.

Pyrenees roads seemed better, more open, excellent surfaces.

Don't beat yourself up over the choice. Either choice is excellent, but I think the Pyrenees offer more choice of road types.

I'd second that :thumb

Going into the Pyrenees though you will also have the option of dropping into France. Plus, as you travel westward the scenery and height of the mountains changes also giving good variety to your holiday.

For me road riding in the the Picos were like the Lake District; relatively compact and great for a short tour, not enough variety and roads for a week.

Pyrenees were a whole different ball game; Pamplona to Andorra and points in between offers an infinite variety of roads so that you do not need to ride the same tarmac twice ( unless it was so good you just had to).

Just remebered that if you check up on Ebbo's posting's on this site, or his own web site Ebbo.org, there is a great write up of a trip he did last year to the Pyrenees, and it contains some very useful info re good value hotels.
