Anyone care to recommend a replacement make that can take a fat bastard standing on a 2' bar?

The obvious answer is not to use a 3/8" drive socket when you should obviously be using a 1/2".

Mac tools or Snap on are the weapons of choice for me.

Erm, all me sockets is free eights, as is me talking wrench.
