Had my first ride on an 08 GS12 yesterday, and to cut a long story short I was impressed:thumb2

I'd dropped the GSA into Barnstormers for a little work, and was given the keys to an 08 1200GS, first impressions was that the colour was a little odd, i'd seen the 'orange' before and was unimpressed, this time with the bike being dirty it looked a little better, i'd guess it would grow on me eventually.

Jumped on board, how small is it:eek: (compared to the GSA) the cockpit area was very sparse, the bars and risers at an odd angle sort of swept down a little and back a bit, i was unsure of this, but as on my previous GS's and GSA the bars were not the most comfortable i'd used, I was willing to give them a go. Turned out I got used to them over a few miles and all was OK, only a long trip would
prove weather the new set up was an improvement.

Started her up and moved off, very smooth power delivery, the screen was a big disapointment after the GSA and the overall feeling was of alot less weather/wind protection than the GSA. Speedo was harder to read the dial looking 'busier' than my 06.

Brakes were OK but failed to produce the bite and power of my 06 servo model, I'd get used to them but it was an interesting comparison (for me anyway) .

Handling, as you would expect this GS definately has the edge over the GSA in the handling department very smooth, held a line to almost perfection (well as good as i can do anyway) very impressive indeed.

The real peach is the engine and gearbox, top stuff, smooth pulling power absolutely everywhere and a real improved urgency from 4K on and the engines ability to rev appears to be improved, the gear box is very smooth with little or no clatter on changes up or down the box, footpeg to gear lever distance is much less cramped than the GSA, gear ratios appear to be slightly different to my 06, giving, with the extra go in the engine, a real feeling of extra performance, those extra 5 horses must be great big carthorses, not riding school hacks.

Whether or not it is that much different, i don't know, but it FEELS a much longer legged bike IYKWIM, roll on from 50 ish is impressive for a GS all the way to 70mph:augie :)rolleyes:it was a loan bike:D)

Little bits and bobs are improved all over the bike

Looks like a good un

I'm just glad they didn't lend me an 08GSA cos if its improved anything like the GS has, my bank account would be in for some serious pain:blast

Closest I can really get to finding out the differences (at the moment anyway:augie) is reading these posts so thanks for taking the time Shep:thumb2

Your right that the ratios are different from previous versions, it's the same on the 08 GSA and in addition you can spec a lower first gear.

The new clocks with speed now shown in 10mph rather than 20 mph increments do look a lot busier but I'm guessing you would get used to them and having the maximum speed limit shown now will of course be a benefit:augie

There are actually more changes to the 08 GS than the GSA with the new tank and bodywork, the repositioned fuel relay should prevent problems with corrosion and the higher filler cap with the twin breather pipes now let you fill right to the neck with no blow back, of course I'm sure you would be aware of this as you'll have filled it up before returning it. :aidan

As with Shep. took an 08 GS out when my GSA was in for service a couple of weeks and concur with his thoughts.

Seemed a little small after the GSA but comfy.
Gearbox was excellent and very slick
Power delivery smooth
Great secure handling
Brakes very powerful and secure (mine is non ABS and non servo)
ESA works......

Overall, I think there are good improvements in the standard GS but I don`t see the same with the Adventure or certainly not enough to dig deep into the wallet!!

I noticed the rear 12v plug has been redesigned a little, have you noticed, is the rear light the same design as before or have they seen the light at last:rolleyes:

I'm sure you will love the new bike, for me it needs the ADV screen and the big tank and then it would be perfect for me:thumb2

Good post, Shep :thumb

Only thing is that I've got to take mine in over the next few days.

Will have to have a look and make sure that I leave the wallet at home :D

I'd never get away with it and the garage keys would be confiscated for life :D

I bought my GS on the basis that it's a keeper so am a bit warry of a test ride in case I really like it................

From what's been posted and what I've read the gearbox sounds the biggest improvement (but then the old one's not bad) so that would be nice to have.

I'm guessing the increased performance is on a par with the mods done to my '05 bike (exhaust, Techlusion and filter) :nenau Mind you, if you carried out those mods to the new engine ..........................

Seing as how the ADV didn't have as as big a makeover as the 'vanilla' did I wonder if they will be doing so next year :nenau

Yes they have moved the rear accessory socket up into the space under the tool tray, at the same time they have moved the relays out of there leaving it clear and very easy to tap into for Autocom etc.

The new tail light is an LED unit and very bright.

As for the GSA screen :augie

The improved performance, i think, has alot more to do with gear ratios being better matched to engine performance, than just increased power alone.

The GSA has the new engine and gearbox and I would guess its a different final drive(?) So i would guess would feel similar

:)blast must stay away must stay away:eek:)

Looking good:thumb2 With the rear light have they sealed the lights contacts (the ones that corrode) or has it all changed along with the LED installation

Do you reckon the gsa tank would fit given all the changes in that area?

2008 GS and GSA have the same drive and ratios apart from the optional low first gear on the GSA

Press kits with details for the GS and GSA might keep you amused :augie

Sorry i meant a different fd ratio from the 06 07 models:blast

cheers

Not had the light out to look at the rear contacts as yet so can't confirm.

Can't see the tank fitting as the entire front subframe of the 08 GS has changed as has the body work.

The 08 GSA uses the same bodywork, tank and panels as the previous bikes.

The new easy to fill GS tank would extend the range a bit you know :augie:aidan

Just walked past your bike again and this time I noticed the Orange 08 Model.

Not a nice colour IMHO.

Looks like you have been off-roading on it .. Loads of Mud up the front of the engine..

So how long will it be before the 08 GSA is parked there ???

Steve

You should have popped in and said hello:nenau

The dealer gave it to me complete with mud

They've started to sell it in a spray can:thumb2

Have you got your 08gsa than?

Shep

Nice report Shep:thumb2

I took out the '08GSA when I had a service at Vines, Guildford.

IMHO I really didn't like it.

Sure the thing moved up and down and stuff....not really sure I would use it that much but I would have it.

I did like the tyre reading thing though and the 10mph increaments on the speedo.

I hated the fact they have removed the cover for the starter motor
I didn't like the new bars and the lack of a brace because of the two piece hand guard fitment. Didn't like the smaller beak or the top yoke.
Hated the filler cap-looked very cheap and was difficult to open the flap covering the lock.
The Colour was pants- I love my White Aluminium... '06
Out on the road the bars were not to my liking and the bike didn't feel as fast or as responsive as mine- granted I have full headers, Cat removed Ti Remus Revo system....
The gearing I really didn't notice much change if at all.....

After the service I got back on to my bike and felt straight at home...

I certainly think this is an interim facelift and the new '09/10 model will be an all dancing and singing total revamp......then they (BMW) will alternate the revamps between the GS and GSA to keep the interest and sales flowing...

R1250 GS Adventure ?....(KTM motor)...... watch this space, well not this space...

Not sure what shop you are .. Glass engraver or the other one ?

GSA estimated arrival date is 01-May-2008 ( Driving me nuts waiting ).

Still I will be an expert on the bike by the time it arrives !! I read so much on here :)

I have learnt that
1. my bike will corrode .
2. my final drive will leak
3. my fuel pump regulator thingy will stop working.
4. my alloy cases will look crap after the first inkling of rain.

But most of all I have learnt to

ignore all the negativity and just go out and ride my new bike and enjoy it :eek:onyack

Cheers

Thats Ok you've still got lots to learn:D

And i'm the other one:thumb2

Get some advertising when it's free Shepl, you mean the one with the blacked out windows and the over 18 to enter sign on the door :ymca

ssssh! She's already a customer, it all part of a roleplay service I offer:D

Anyway just gave the 12gs back to Bahnstormers and it was great to be back on the ADV, she may not have the pace of the newcomer, but she feels like home, like a comfy pair of boots:clap

On a "give it some down the straight" evaluation it may be 5mph or more down over a few hundred yards, but she's an old friend by now so i can forgive her the odd wrinkle:thumb
