Had the the 1150 GS now for 6 months from new and done just over 10,000 miles.
Superb bike and lots of fun!
This week-end went for a quick run with some mates and at a tea stop, parked the bike on the sidestand facing downhill.
After our tea stop, got on the bike, and started her up as usual to be greated by a cloud of blue smoke.
Prior to setting off the oil level was right on the dot and was still in the same place on my return 120 miles later.
Bike has 'y' piece and a Remus can and has never done this before.

Question -

Has this happened to anyone else?
Thoughts?
I guess the downhill facing must have been contributary?

Blue Smoke

My bike seems to have the nature to do that only if I left it on the side stand after a fair ride. Think it could be warm oil passing the rings and then settles on the piston. Not to sure but never had this when I parked the bike on the centre stand. Read somewhere on the BB that some bikes tend to use more oil when parked on the side stand regularly than when on the main.

Cheers

Smoke.

Maverick!
Try to do this with an old Boxer: I'm sure you are going to see MUCH smoke!
Don't worry, thats the charm with Boxers!:inlove
I love the old BMW Boxers. (Do you call them ''flat twin''?)

Swooper,

At the end of the day, if blue smoke is coming out of the exhaust, that shows that oil is in the combustion chamber. (Or you've been filling up with that blue petrol again :D )

The first thing always to check is that the oil level is not too high - if it is, the excess oil will find it's way to where it shouldn't be. You say that this is OK, but it happened after being on the side-stand. For this, Maverick's explanation is the most logical.

Finally, you could now get really paranoid about new rings, new bores, new valve guides........

Liv is right

when i do this with my R100GS you have a 10 second instant fog. My only experience with an oilhead is with a 1995 R1100R. Same thing happened when parked on sidestand and worse when cold, but relatively short duration. Wouldn´t worry.

Doyou Smoke?

Yup mime does that to, my R850 and my K also did it, oil level never drops enough to worry, thing that puzzels me. My old Boxers never did must be a difference in oil level relative to born hight and angle of dangle when on the side stand.
