Just spoken to Wally at CW's about a list of warranty claims.
1. Corroding fork brace
2. LH Pannier
3. Fork caps, split.
4. Rear shock.
Last time we spoke it was agreed that the shock would be replaced by an Ohlins with myself paying the difference in value, fork brace and caps, ok and the pannier? Still no joy. Wally said he'd spoken to the BM rep who basically shrugged his shoulders, said they were aware of the problem but offered no solution.
Today, upon speaking, BMW won't allow CW's to upgrade the shock and still no answer on the pannier. I rang customer service who said that there should be a way around the shock difficulties and that they'd speak to Wally about the pannier. This is the fourth time i've tried to get this sorted and i've told customer service i'm fed up with being given a run around. I have been assured that things will be sorted.... Will appraise you if anything developes. In case i have to take things further, anyone out there had similar dealings and where/what did you do next?

As I posted earlier, I had no joy trying to 'upgrade' to a rear Öhlins when my OE Showa went tits up - I was surprised, to say the least, that your dealer told you he'd be willing to do it (bearing in mind all he'll get from BMW is a new Showa). That said, my shock was supplied & fitted with no delay or quibble (failed at 14k, I think).

Fork brace replacement shouldn't be an issue, there's ample evidence of these being replaced on this forum (including bikes out of warranty IIRC). What's the snag with the pannier?

Mike

Tried That :(
I was told it was'nt in bmws interest to replace warranty items
with non bmw parts.
As told by the spc :tosser 's

Crikey...one would have expected better than that wouldn't one?

As I'm looking to buy a used GS could someone elaborate on the 4 "faults" listed, or point me in the right direction elsewhere on this site. Ta.
I currently own a Yamaha and I know several fellow Yam owners who've had no probs with warranty replacement of shocks. In fact I had forks replaced free and without any hassle after the warranty had expired.
As I've said elsewhere the BMW "attitude" is begining to make me think twice about buying a GS. But then again.

Regards
Tim

Shock's knackered, fork braces are an ongoing pain for all telelever owners, the fork caps are a minor thing and the pannier is only a minor cosmetic thing. I'm not really asking for much to be done but i'm getting messed around all the same. Other than that it's still the only bike i want to ride, it just seems that BMW need an almighty kick up the arse!

In fairness, the fork brace corrosion snag isn't universal (mine, for instance, is fine) and, unless someone here can say different, is swapped without quibble by BMW.

Mike:)

Fork braces can be a problem but we have never had warranty claim on one of these rejected by BMW.

I wonder if I could be the first?

Mine's pitted....should I claim?

Try asking for a WP.

Years ago in the jurasic aircooled era (R100GS), a WP shock was listed as an option under the "sports suspension" package. They're just as good as an Ohlins.

How long does it take the fork brace corrosion to rear it's ugly head - is it an age, high mileage thing or random?

Seems fairly random. Mine was first registered 1 Mar 02 and has not suffered, Wakey's is 6 months or so older and he's had his replaced.....

Mike:)

Mike O
Youv'e got 6 months left then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

with regard to the fork brace, i was told some time ago by a nice man at jeffries that the problem was found on all the early gs's due to the brace being manufactured without a necessary heat treatment being done prior to painting

true or otherwise i don't know
