BMW engine bars

If the 2009 ones fit,71-60-7-677-270, they're £212 inc.VAT

Do yourself and the bike a favour, get a set of Hepco and Becker bars, they are much better made and will actually protect the heads at slow speeds rather than the BM's which just fold...resulting in new covers and bars.

How do you know this?

Had the H&B's on my 1150 and had a couple of low speed and dropping from stationery without any damage to the bike apart from the obvious scratches to the bars.

BMW bars ordered and fitted with the 1200, dropped the damn thing when getting off it standing on one of the kids toys in the garage, resulting in the bars bending back and scratching to the rocker cover. I can guarantee the H&B's would have taken a stupid drop like this in their stride, the BM bars must be made out of some sort of soft cheese, and they don't wrap around the head like the H&B's.

My experience only, but I certainly would rather spend my money on something which does what it says on the tin.

Maybe you were unlucky Mika. I threw my last GS down the road a couple of times at 20 - 30 mph. Horrible bouncing noise as I watched it going away and engine bar bent but no head damage at all.

The BMW bar is in three pieces and it is possible to just change the bent bit after a fall at just over £100. I don't know if this can be done with other makes

I have been told that if you drop your bike with BMW ones the rear of the cylinder head gets marked. What about the head covers BMW or Touratech etc. Any advice.

Dropping the bike doesn't do the BMW aluminium head covers a power of good - but then that's what they are there for. Mine survived one drop without a mark but was ripped off in the second. Heads survived unmarked though.

i fitted BMW bars to my 04 gs, i had a bad off last april when i parted company with the bike due to diesel (bloody Tractors) the bike fell heavily onto its left side and slid for 40 metres result crashbar corner ground down and pannier written off BUT no damage to cylinders or engine, they are worth every penny

pannier written off

One advantage of big ali boxes - my Zega panniers acted as a pretty good rear crash bar. On a slow speed off all that happened was a small dent in a bottom corner and some scraping along the edge where the lid joins the body, most of which polished out.

A bigger off on a roundabout (bloody diesel again) resulted in the bike bouncing down the road. The pannier bent somewhat but it was possible to straighten it out and carry on using it. I don't think the Varios would have survived as well.
