I took out the 3rd year extension to the original BMW warranty ( will expire in June 09) and received a letter this week inviting me to extend the warranty for another year for €490 incl europe wide recovery.

Underwritten by Mondial in Holland.

Certainly my 3rd year premium paid for itself with a final drive and ABS pump replaced in the last 12 months.
Wondering should I renew it or have I dealt with the major gremlins under the first warranty extension?

Has anyone else used this warranty? What were your experiences?

Extended warranty

Just renewed mine for second time. Wouldn't go anywhere without it. I think it's reasonably priced considering it includes European Breakdown/Recovery.

Regards,
Kieran.

having seen what can happen on a recent trip and considering the breakdown end of the service, i shelled out as well. my bike is currently in southern spain so i felt it was worth while to keep it covered. it is expensive though and had i more time i might have researched looking for a less expensive warranty in spain. planning to bring the bike home in a month or so so even at that, it will be reassuring for the trip.

I renewed mine for the K1200GT through BMWUK, I imported the bike from the UK and reregistered it here. I got a notification from BMWUK £360 with 0 excess, it was £320 with £100 excess.

Hopefully this time round I will be able to avail of the extended warranty. My last bike, a 2005 RT1200 was due to go out of warranty end of 2008. I contacted my dealer in October 2008 to enquire about an extended warranty. I was told the warranty wasn't available in Ireland at that time. I made a number of calls to the dealer before the end of the year to see if policy had changed. I was told in the second week of January that warranty was available in Ireland but that as my bike was out of manufacturers warranty by two weeks I couldn't extend my warranty despite meeting all other requirements for the warranty ie, low mileage, dealer serviced, etc. My dealer tried on my behalf to get me an extended warranty but was told by UK it wouldn't happen. :aidan

The only issue with the extended warranty is that its not recognised in Europe - breakdown and collection is fine but any repairs need to be paid for.

I broke down in the Picos last Easter and was picked up and taken to BMW Santander. The recovery cost nothing but the repair - a replacement lambada sensor cost me a couple of hundred euros which I had to reclaim when I got back through my dealer.

That bit took months but Clarks weren't exactly up to speed on the process

I could live with that, seem fair enough to me, as long as I was re-emburst or revovered home if it was terminal.
I have BMW road assist, AA for UK and Ireland + Carole Nash european cover.

Have a read and give them a call and see if the situation has changed. Only the cost of a call to lose.

I decided to renew and shelled out today. I had a look across my warranty receipts and so far I've had 2 front discs, a front wheel , final drive , ABS Servo , front engine cover and a fuel tank unit under warranty. ( Johnny Cash springs to mind.....one piece at a time and it did'nt cost me a dime etc ...) 10/10 to Kearys Motorrad in Cork for always sorting it out with the minimum of fuss.:D

Jeez ... Thats a fair bit to go wrong for a machine advertised as unstoppable...

Fair play to Kearys for sorting it

Yep, and thats in 18,750 Km. Had a VFR 800 before this and THAT was unstoppable. Great engineering and completely trouble free in 7 years of ownership.

Mind you at this rate, I will end up with a '09 bike in Jig Time :D

Alternatively, honda just didn't let you know what they replaced at each service. ;)

If I thought Honda were running a 7 year warranty service for parts and labour I would never have changed!!:blast

Have to admit though that I have warmed to the GSA and appreciate it for what it can and cant do, despite any component quality issues. :thumb2
My local dealer has made these issues pretty hassle free so the ownership experience has been fine. With a different dealer perhaps the story would be different.

Have you never bought a bike out of warranty and taken it to a dealer for service and had them check to see if there is work outstanding? I have.
The warranty for parts failure may only last 2 years or whatever, but on certain items that have been subject to (often silent) recall (especially on safety grounds) throughout a products life the dealer can usually claim for the parts/labour to do the work long after those 2 years if has not already been done.

Out of warranty tends to be a case of "tough titty" over here I'm afraid. However, good info to know for the future if I ever return to another marque. I think its possibly a case of the market gets what it demands, and the market here is too small to generate the necessary pressure to ensure that level of customer service.
