I have my 1200GS insured with BMW, and have just had a quote to get my G650X on the same policy. A very reasonable price I must admit.

However, the G650X being used for trail riding only, I have fitted getting on for £950 worth of bits (bashplate, handguards, gps bracket, blah blah - christ it mounts up. All bolted on etc.

But whilst they will insure the bike having noted the "modifications" (their words not mine), they wont insure the extras either on the comprehensive insurance bit or the theft bit, even for an increased premium. :blast

I find that a bit odd especially as a lot of it is bit from BMW (the rest being from Touratech).

Anyone else found a way round this?

My understanding of my BMW policy is that BMW branded accessories will be covered, but things like my sargent seat, autocom, tourtech bag bags and sat nav won't. Had I bought a BMW sat nav, it would.

So I think the advice is to send them a full list of accessories you put on it and ask specifically what won't be covered.

The word of some bloke off the internet is not going to help in a claim :thumb2

So write to the devitts/nig (bmw insurance) and get it writing what is and is not covered.

The additional bike should be only £10.50 on top of your premium BUT if you added it midway through a year they add admin charges which takes the figure much higher than £10.50

That is an odd understanding as my 1200GS and GSA both came straight out of the shop door with Remus headers and a Remus can, neither of which are BuMW branded but both are insured under my BuMW Motorrad policy without a doubt.... or at least there is no exclusion on my policy tell me that they are not.

There has been some recent threads on UKGSer telling us that Devitt (I think) were asking customers with non-OE parts fitted to have a certification made that they had been fitted correctly. Whether this is true, or whether the underlying reason is to winkle out those claimants who, shall we say, get imaginative when their bike is stolen is a matter for conjecture.

I don't know :nenau

That's what the lady on the phone told me.

On a recent quote I received from BMW Insurance they questioned why the value of the bike was significantly higher than the standard cost...

...I stated it was because of the extras that I had had fitted...

....they only asked if they were BMW extras, and had they been fitted by the dealer..once they knew it was they were happy.

.....unlike my existing insurer who questioned the value...then refused to cover the panniers/top box and sat nav (I'm still fighting against that one!).

I do agree that it wouldn't worth getting it in writing...but would have thought Bmw extras, fitted by a Bmw dealer would be covered.

.....after all, Bmw's prices are all 'base' spec, then you add the extras to suit...it's the Bmw way!...on cars and bikes.

I have the BMW Insurance (though its actually via Devitts) and both my 1200GSA and K1100RS are covered FC etc. Given I wanted all the accessories covered on the GSA (most the usual stuff i.e HID's, Remus, Akra, Sargent, Xtreme screen etc) I sent them a long list. As I had fitted everything myself I needed to get an independant garage report done before they would insure the add ons. Any garage would do so it went to my local mechanic who did it gratis for me.

Reasons given were to ensure they were actually fitted to the bike (a symptom of modern times) and that my wiring was up to a suitable standard so it won't go up in flames spontaneously. I had no issues with getting this done because I can at least feel safe in the knowledge there will be no arguments should there need to be a claim. Cost me an extra £18 on the premium for the added loading. Job done and no need to read any more posts asking "am I covered?"
