What planet are they on?

They did me a good deal when I bought the bike 3 years ago. Got a note through (still on the database) for renewal this time, suggesting I call them with that all important discount code.

Over £500  compared with other quotes around £200.

Additionally they cannot quote for recovery (the European recovery was included previously). They can do it for non BMW's but if it's for a BMW you have to go through the dealer :blast

I had similar assurance - paid £397 last year received a renewal asking for £401 went online for a quote and got £327. Called them up and they honoured the £327 price.

They've just changed underwriters to Allianz. Previously it was managed by Devitt. My renewal's just gone up from £171 to £221. That's 29%...!

I've just insured a brand new 1200 GSA through BMW/Devitt underwritten by Allianz for £190! 3 years NCB. Locked in garage. No fines or convictions. Rural wilds mind you.

Having just spoken to them, it's clear they make it up as they go along. Quoted £167.75 on the web. "I can't understand that Sir, we have the same rates on the web". After a bit of fiddling and "adjusting things" - final quotation = £167.75.

Well my experience with them was pretty rubbish along with everything in terms of finance. I looked at a new F800GS and have my parents finance it and i pay them. Good credit rating can easily get finance and they said i cannot own the bike. So that went out the window, buying one privately now called BMW insurance up and they said we have a quote not with us but from an insurer of £790. Only £125 more than i got quoted on the internet. So much for BMW insurance.

Mine went up from 500 to 550. (fire and theft + third party, living in London, 6k insured value)
The Carole Nash quote was 300.

To be fair at least there are not any anal clauses about bike use.
I was able to include commuting at not additional price (well... it's 4 miles per day if I drive :aidan ) and there are no restrictions on where and when to park the bike at night as I had with previous insurers. I'd rather pay a bit more and not have to deal with all that.

I'll just have to discuss the price with them beforehand at the next renewal...

Assuming you mean the BMW Motorrad Insurance scheme?

The insurer was NIG, who had been flagging up their desire to get out of parts of the UK motor market for some time. I seem to recall they took the underwriting over from Cornhill, which is now owned by Allianz.

The insurer is now Allianz, possibly due to some other broader link up with BMW? So history is repeating itself, sort of.

The broker (manager) is still the monkeys at Devitt.

Devitt has changed ownership though. They used to be part of the RBS bank group, the bank that screwed up so badly it had to be taken into public ownership. RBS sold the company to Devitt's management, probably to release cash (or lose less, if Devitt traded at a loss) and hopefully speed up the return on UK plc's investment in the bank. Maybe Devitt are just shoving the management fees up?

Ring around for an alternative quote or ask Devitt if they will requote. If you cannot find anything less than £221 at terms that suit you, then £221 is indeed the best price in town. If you can find something overall better, then all it has cost you is some time and effort...... ah, I see you have done that, cheaper than last year, too. Well under a pound a day; it's cheaper than haggis.

That's why they started pestering me for the no claims discount certificate even if it was just an (automatic) renewal of the same policy... :D
(I was aware of the insurer change though)

Mines due for renewal on 13/12/11.
2011 r1200gs 1k in extras 2007 g650 x/country.

Spoke to them on the phone, another renewal quote arrived yesterday £237.

Most insurers do this with existing customers. The only exception I have found is Aviva who offered me a renewal of £15 more than what I paid last year or in percentage terms an increase of 6.4%. This was with an unresolved claim as well. No-one else could get anywhere near them.
