Looks like I will be around Garmisch beginning of July this year so thinking of stopping over, looking for advice. I can only spend a couple of days, probably the Sat/Sun. Not really a fan of big bike gatherings usually but as i'm close and have the time.. Any one been? is it worth just the 2 days (middle and last day) any recommendations on hotels, camping, things to see/do or more to the point avoid. Thanks

You'll find that most of the reasonable priced accommodation in Garmisch is already fully booked... Never tried camping there ...

Motorrad days is a nice day out...more like a trade exhibition than a bike show... not much to buy there, but good for a wander around.

Take the chair lift near to the old olympic ski jump.... if it's a nice day , well worth the effort :thumb2

Also try the Fernpass... and take in a stop in Innsbruck ....

Hi

The search function will give you loads of info, including routes and hotels.

The thing to be aware of is that it's like booking for the TT, you need to be early to get the best choice of accommodation. In addition, very few hotels will just book one night. They can sell the rooms several times over and would not want to take the chance of having an empty room at their busiest time

Cant offer much advice, but me and Mrs B are planning our 1st trip to Germany and the Gamish Festival. It will be a quick trip. Heading across the chunnel lunchtime on Thursday and returning on Monday. We have found and booked a couple of Hotels with secure bike parking and will just visit the Festival on the Saturday.

BMW tour group stays over at the Dorint Sport hotel, half hour walk to the festival. Food is good and service is good. Camping I think is free and you'll meet some characters. Facilities can be overcrowded. A quick hour at the festival is all you need to see what is to see. The Saturday evening party is what it is about. Get some VIP tickets if you want to mingle with the tour groups. There is a nice walk near the hotel that takes you through the creek. Zugspitze is only a train ride away and recommended to go, highest point in Germany. As for ride outs, fill yer boots, it is on the border with Austria. Click on the photo and it will take you to my flickr album. Tour report.

From the top of the ski slpoe, festival site is to the left at the foot of the hill in the distance.

The party starts early

Have been to the BMW rally three times. Friday and Saturday are the main days with the beer tent hosting bands all evening. Big organised ride out is on the the Saturday with tens of thousands of bikes. There is certainly enough to keep you interested at the show all of one day, a few beers in the evening and then some local ride outs the next day.

Sunday is pretty quiet (if you are spiritual I beleive there is there is a blessing of the bikes) with the event pretty much wound down by early afternoon.

First two times I stayed in Garmisch for 3 nights - I used the the local tourist office on-line booking system to find accommodation. It is certainly still possible (if you try now or Feb) to find reasonably priced B&B accommodation in the town within walking distance of the event. Plenty of restaurants in town for an evening meal or you can eat at the BMW event in the beer tent.

Third time I stayed in Austria (Hotel Fernblick in Serfaus) and had a day trip to the BMW event.

Thanks all. will have a look at suggestions. Have been to Garmisch a couple of times but only overnight on route to other places.

Have you fixed anything up. Two of us are renting an apartment in Garmish from Friday to Sunday but one of our group has pulled out so we have a vacancy.
