BMW Nav1V problems - anyone got an explanation & cure?

If this is a software issue it doesn't happen on my 390 so either it has different routing software or there is another cause. Sounds bloody annoying though

John

Hey John yes It was the first few times it happened, but now I am savvy to it and quite satisfying to do the vee's at the set when I catch it out :D

It hasn't always done it so I assume its a software issue from the last update ?? hopefully!

Noorfook,

A. Does the problem occur:

1. With an A to B route you create on your computer and then send to your device?

2. With an A to B route that you create just on your device?

3. Both the above?

B. Does the problem occur every time you use the device or just sometimes?

Hi Wapping,
Not no:1. I imported Routes des Cretes from my PC and that worked fine. Its when I plan a route A to B on the device. If I'm on an Autoroute it takes me into and out of every lay-by. If using N & D roads; It would occasionally turn me off the road I was on. Tell me I was off Route, turn me around and put me back on the road I was on originally. When in the 'Sticks' on 'D' or unclassified roads it would seem to see unpaved roads as paved roads and use them in calculating a route for me. All of the above don't seem to happen all the time but I don't know whether it's an intermittent fault or my A to B was too short to replicate the error or perhaps too simple a route to throw up the aberrations. -I've done a hard re-set and sprayed the electrical contacts with a specific cleaner. I'm out for a ride today over a mixture of roads in the UK and I'll see how it performs...

2. With an A to B route that you create just on your device?

For me it happens when I create a route on the device. It fucked me up good and proper when riding through France & Belgium last year, directing me off to parts of the world miles away from my destination. Thankfully I always carry paper maps.

I find creating a route on the device takes far longer than doing it on my laptop and transferring it. Obviously if I just want to get to my destination I can do that directly on the device and use the routing preferences to take me along the sort of roads I prefer. So, for instance, A to B in the car I would probably use motorways just to get it over with. Mostly I use the bike for pleasure so I prefer to use more interesting roads . In that case I plot the route in Mapsource so that I am making the routing decisions and not the device. I simply enter my start and end points, let Mapsource suggest a route and then drag and drop until I am happy. My start and end points are waypoints but everything else is usually a via point. Occasionally I might add a waypoint on the route but only when it is somewhere I definitely want to go, say a cafe where I have arranged to meet friends.

On the subject of problems in navigating to the start of a route from another location I find that if the "start" point is a waypoint the device simply navigates me there (using my preferences) and then carries on with the planned route without altering the route in any way.

Which is exactly what you'd expect it to do, indeed.

Similarly, if you were away from a pre-planned route (at another location, in other words) and chose the end point B as your destination - or any intermediate waypoint between A and B - you'd expect it to take you there, too. There would be plenty of complaints if it didn't, that's for sure.

I can only guess that it's something in your settings. Either that or you are trying to navigate to a different town. I have seen this happen when a bod tried to get to Agincourt (English spelling) when he should have asked the device for Azincourt (French spelling). The 'French' Agincourt is miles and miles away. He cursed his satnav as it kept trying to take him where he didn't want to go.

Me? I'd hard reset the device, update the software and reload the latest maps. I'd then be very careful as to what 'Preference' settings I set.

it may help if you list your exact preferences you have set on both device and computer, doing this may shed some light on the situation,
