Can somebody tell me why in their wisdom the BMW cradle for the Navigator blocks access to the plug in audio output making it necessary to get a Bluetooth headset

On account of the cradle, it's not possible to get Stereo audio out of the Nav IV, except by Bluetooth. You could, I am confident, get a Zumo 660 cradle. You will lose the side buttons, but the 660 cradle has proper audio-in, audio-out and power connections on a long fly-lead.

Thanks newboy and I'll look into that but presumably that wouldn't function with the wheel thingy on the TE. I'm toying with drilling a hole in the cradle to access the headphone socket on the Navigator

Because they want you to buy a BMW System helmet with integral BMW Bluetooth comms, at a BMW price. Simples.
