Does anyone know if the Bmw-supplied alarm for the R1200GS is "plug and play" or if it has to be matched to the bike by specific programming with a diagnostic computer (like the one they have at the dealers...). The alarm on my bike (May '04, 60000km) has died, and the mechanic at the dealership says that I would need to bring the bike in to set up a new alarm....Any ideas anyone?
In fact, only the motion-sensor part of the alarm has died..the unit makes all the right flashes and squawks when it is activated, but refuses to go off when I "steal" the bike...I have even undone the securing screws and shaken the alarm unit...no result. I don't suppose that there is much I can repair inside the alarm unit and will buy a fresh one but can't see why it should need a dealership to plug it in.

alarm

need to take it to a dealer mate. Needs to be plugged into there computer so the software can be put into bike to make it recognise new unit.
If you take it off completely it needs to go on the computer to tell the bike its not there anymore. Not a case of plug and play unit.

Spaniard,
are you sure you are arming it properly ? By default it does not "squawk" when set - only when you disarm the motion sensor ;)

To set the alarm just press the left-hand ( ribbed) button once. If you press it again the indicators flash 3 times, you get 3 "squawks" and the motion sensor is disabled.
