Guys,

My old 2012 twin-cam had a factory fit alarm. I'm not normally a fan of alarms but this was easy to get on with, it had a fob but disarmed with the ignition key and armed automatically so the fob was redundant. Pretty good IMO.

My 2017 LC has no alarm, but is there are similar alarm available to fit, linked to the ignition like on my old bike ?
How easy is it to fit ? I can get a GS911 if needed. Would a used one be an easy fit ?

Thanks
John

I wouldn't bother honestly, no advantage, not thatcham approved etc

PLug and play i think. but as the other have said ..... meh

It does still have the benefit of integration with the bike though. No need to use a fob. Does make a sound noise if moved (if anyone takes any notice, which is doubtful.
But if parked outside a shop, you'd know about it.......

You may order it as a retrofit kit.

Basically, the kit consists of a box with electronics and a screw for fastening. The cables are already there. The dealer needs to hook your bike up and activate the alarm in order to make it work.
It will then work in the same way as you are used to with your previous bike.

I had one on my 2016 GS and found it to be pretty much useless. The sound level the alarm it gave off was nothing short of pathetic and if you move your bike around at home you have to switch the ignition on every time or disable it via the menu or it goes off. Having no fob to arm and disarm it was a real negative IMO. I bought a xenon disc lock with a built in alarm which was far louder and much cheaper

Mine's a keyless and you can set my factory one to auto arm or manual with the fob

I hardly ever engage my alarm, so I may be on thin ice here.
But I feel pretty confident that even if the alarm is set to auto-arm it is still possible to disarm it by using the key-FOB. Or do you perhaps have a none-keyless bike and thus is lacking the FOB?

Mine was not a keyless bike (I've had another 1200 and have a 1250 now) so later bikes might work via a fob but the sound it made was pitiful and even with a fob I wouldn't have spec'd it again. As others have said you don't get an insurance discount for having one which says a lot but each to their own :beerjug:

Ive got one on a keyless, got to say I like it. And if I do set it off coz ive not got the keys with me, I can't stop in the garage with it going, way too loud. Maybe they have changed them from some of the previouse comments?

Both the alarm on my 2017 GS and on my r1250 burn my ears, so I've never understood the comments about the sound being weak. There are also some of us who see the value, yet every time somebody asks about how the retrofit rather than 'should I retrofit'. we get the same old thread rearing its head.

With my 15 keyed GSA it was possible to buy the GT1600 remote fob and have it programmed by the dealer so you could activate/ deactivate as required.
With my keyed 17 TB GSA turned out the dealer could no longer programme remotes.
Strongly worded letter to Customer Services returned how they took security seriously and the dealer shouldn't have done it blah blah blah.
So the alarm was either activated in which case every time you went to move the bike it went off unless you turned the ignition on or you turned it off through the settings which became the default.
Move on to 2019 1250 Keyless GSA and the alarm functionality with the remote has been returned. So all is well.
Looking back I thing it coincided with the introduction of keyless ignition. There may have been some conflicts.

Not quite understanding this, unless things changed with the 2017.5, but you could choose to have the alarmed automatically activated or key fob activated. Perhaps I am not understanding what you said?

With the 15 bike with keyed ignition separate remotes could be sourced and programmed by the dealer.
When did keyless ignition start?
With the 17 bike with keyed ignition the alarm was either on or off as selected through the menus on the instruments. Remotes sourced separately could no longer be programmed to activate/deactivate the alarm.
Keyless bike alarms can be set/unset with a remote.

I've had a 13, 15 and 17.5 now.. all worked from the key fob if you wanted.. or set to Auto on the keyless bike 17.5?

Sitting indoor's

The alarm can scream it's tits off, and you wont hear it.

My car alarm has more ooomph,

that fucker would wake the dead lol

sometimes its just the flashing nag in the cluster that's enough to make the hoodie nick a different one

the LC ones are loud and very sensitive to movement.... its all adjustable, vol level, beep as it arms etc. as is auto on with the key or the time it drops out to save the battery (usually 3 days)
the silly thing is they never bother to give the manual on how it works (search on the internet)

not sure if its a must have but the DWA (bm speak for alarm) is the bit the HEX code can bus wire toys up feature plugs into, so might be useful just for that.

they aren't all the same but they all look like it... somehow each model gets its own part number… you see shed load of raced S100-RR once selling brand new alarms on ebay for nearly nothing. I expect you could get it to work.

One key thing on a late-ish bike.... BMW software updates only go on a stock bike or one where they authorised the fitment of toys and it shows up on Germany's records. So coding yourself (not sure possible without fakes versions of ISTA) may mean you can never update the bike without a fight ...and these days there's an update you need every 10 minutes

"I've had a 13, 15 and 17.5 now.. all worked from the key fob if you wanted.. or set to Auto on the keyless bike 17.5?"

My 17.5 TB Keyed with normal dash could no longer be programmed to the GT1600 remotes so that was maybe where the cut off date was.

When I traded in the 17 TB i removed the alarm. Well it was an 'accessory' after all.

On my 19 HP GSA I fitted the alarm myself and had the dealer code it for not a lot.

HOWEVER the alarm did not activate when it was moved.

So back to the dealer who plugged in and checked the perameters. All in order. Some investigation revealed that the part number had been upgrade. Nothing from the Mother Ship as to why.

So upgraded one ordered and fitted by dealer at the usual costs. And there was me thinking I'd save a few quid. I ended up spending more than I would have done if I'd ordered with the new bike + it would have been covered by the 3 year warranty.

However when leaving the dealership I found that the new alarm would not activate with movement.

Sudden realisation that if the fob is near the alarm will not activate. None of the technicians twigged that one. And I really have no reason to disbelieve them.

Sold the alarm on here and fitted to new bike with no issues.

So these updated part numbers would appear to be a bit of a BMW con trick.
