bmw off road school - worth it?

hi all, considering the bmw school weekend.... those that have been is it worth close to £600( inc accom)?? seems a tad expensive

Don't do it!

It's cost me £thousands since I did the course!

  • A new DR-Z 400
  • A new Husaberg FE450
  • A new Husaberg FE570
  • Trailer
  • Jetwash
  • Riding kit
  • Weeks and weekends away enjoying myself

£600 is nothing in comparison!

£600 for a weekends trail riding and instruction is for the new generation of Adventurers.

What about riding your own bike on unsealed roads?
I won't say 'save the £600' but spend it doing your own thing at your own pace.
On this site and similar there are weekends organised with trail rides going out, suiting various levels of skill. These rides are lead by folk with as good a skill as the BMW school people.
OK, if you don't ride your bike 'off-road' and don't wish to, and you don't want to do a 'Greg' and end up £ks deep, then yes, the BMW school may be the option for you.

Your location is Switzerland, so I imagine it will be difficult to put your schooling in to practice.......
If your UK based, the TRF has a good network of groups that have a full spectrum of riders and bikes. Take a look..... http://www.trf.org.uk/
Annual membership is £40, and you can ride on as many arranged rides as you can get your name to.

I've not done the BMW course but have easily spent the same amount with Yamaha Schools in Llanidloes over the years, and while I love trail riding too, I don't think you can beat the kind of instruction you get from somebody who's been a British Enduro champion 10 times.

Still might have a crack at the BMW course at some point. I've had my R1200GS off-road a few times on green lanes but have always held back, knowing what it could cost me if I try to ride it like my DRZ / CRF. Having somebody else's bike to do that on should be worth £600 alone. :augie

I have been on a few offroad breaks in spain, with redtread, for less than the cost of the bmw course, and that includes flights.

I have done the basic off road course with BMW....for me it was great and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I will go again as soon as funds allow.

I have also ridden off road in Spain with Trailblazers...brillient time, great tracks in the National Park....Graham Ross is the main man there...pm me if you want more info, i am in regular contact with them.,

That's where we'll be riding on Tossers-in-the-Tejada III in a few days time.

I gather Graham is going to be away when we're there, but I look forward to meeting Liz again.

Please say hi and give Liz a big hug from me, I won't get to see her until the Dirt Bike and Bike Show at the NEC

I've just done it, been off roading for a while, done Morocco and the local sludgy mountains.
However the BMW course will make you believe you can ride where a mountain goat cant walk.

More than worth it.

I did the Redtread thing to Spain, fantastic area, but for me the bar was too high. Felt dangerous and we were to pay for all damages to the bikes.

Did BMW last weekend, paid for by my employer and after the previous Redtread experience, I dont know that I would ever have put up the cash myself.

Having done it, It was worth every penny....... I honestly wish I had gone here a few years ago rather than waste a grand to go to Redtread.

This was proper training, structured and we were encouraged and our skills improved with every challenge. My group, were all mates from work of a similar ability so we had no 'specials' to worry about... We progressed well and I achieved more in 2 days than I was able to do in Spain.... Better still, the bikes were all this season's models, which had been trashed by previous customers and the damages are included in your fee.

We had Simon as our instructor.... none of our bikes sustained damage at our hands, but by the end of day 2 he had us confidently riding at big speed through a bit of a circuit.......... It wasn't a race....... but we were all trying to come first :D

This afternoon a couple of us were actually contemplating trying to find 2 grand each to join BMW in Portugal this November..... it was that good.

do it!

I went on the Off Road Skills course a couple weeks back and can’t rate it more highly.

The course is extremely well run and a lot of thought has been put into the course structure. They start of with basic skills and control exercises then off for a few rides throwing in the odd lesson or two along the way, stuff like handling steep accents and descents, bike recovery, etc…

It might seem pricey, but for your £450, you get bike hire, insurance, excellent tuition, 2 lunches, 1 group dinner. Every time you get back to base camp you can help yourself to bottles of water, fruit, lunch bars.

I’m relatively new to this off road stuff and I’ve done a few days out, but I learnt more in a couple of hours at ORS, that all my riding before. By the end of the 2 days I could not believe what we were doing out there

Great course, great crew running it

If it DOESN'T go pear shaped than it is good.

If it does go pear shaped than you wished you hadn't done it as they are so ill equipped to dealing with pear shaped situations that it is just not very funny.

I got off pretty lightly .. only had to ride their bike back to their base from the site with a broken leg, after waiting for them to finish the day. Then they "offered" to take me to hospital where I had another 5-6 hour wait.

I met a lady on a holiday to WDW 2007 and it was worst for her. They had no plans for people who injure themselves "out there" ... so no plans for ambulance access and her story of pain just to get off the site was bloody horrific.

Again .. if nothing bad happens it probably is a great course

If it goes pear shaped .. these guys got you to sign a form and take no responsibility is my personal experience.

I also did the course a couple of weeks back.

BLOODY GOOD!

Well worth the money.

Don't worry about dropping your bike on the course, 'coz you'll be riding one of theirs! Use of one of their bikes is included in the cost and you get to pick what bike you want to use.

I'll say it again - BLOODY GOOD COURSE - Do it!

Totally different from my experience!

On my course there were a few falls and a few freak injuries. Broken leg, Dislocated Knee, small fracture to collarbone. Not all on the same person I hasten to add!

On each occasion first aid was prompt and effective and the broken leg and dislocated knee were casevac'd out in the S Wales Air Ambulance.

That's my experience.
