Being the tight git that I am, I'm currently looking at bidding for a set of BMW panniers from ebay. The good news is they're cheap (so far), the bad news is the reason they're cheap is the lack of keys... and they're locked shut. So, the question is; how easy are they to get open and re-keyed? Having used the search function (wow, miracle, I know) I've seen some hints that the locks are not to difficult to pick open (or there is always the option of a friendly locksmith), but nothing definitive. So, is it posible to open them with not much hassle?

Cheers

very simple for a locksmith to open matt.. and very simple to re-key to your ignition. any BMW dealer can do that in about 5 minutes for you. I did it myself.. just removed two of the (I think 4) plates that 'didn't work' with my keys.. so the locks now work... aren't perhaps as high security as with the full set of plates. but whose going to know that?

take your keys along when you go see the locksmith.. he may.. just may, be able to do the same for you.

But if you need them to be rekeyed.. its not a lot of money. (or you can buy a kit from motorworks I believe and DIY if you want)

Cool, that's what I like to hear :D

I'll have a bid and see if I can pick up a bargain. Security isn't a real issue . They'll only get get used for camping/touring and can be stored where ever I'll be sleeping.

Cheers

Expensive bit with a locksmith is the call-out.
Take the panniers to him and he'll have them open in a jiffy.

Once lost the key to the petty cash tin (yeah, spare key was inside :blast)

Took it to the locksmiths and it took him about 2.5 femtoseconds to open it.

Yeah, I'll have a go myself first... got a lock-pick set for christmas a couple of years ago, perfect chance to try it out :D then the pro can have a go once I'd given up after 5 minutes.
