BMW R80/7

the silent "but"...

Or maybe Mr Farmer is right about how good the R90 engine is, and that the R80 carries a silent "...but" in comparison?

A good observation, I have the same feeling. Despite many enjoyable miles in the past on an R80, there is a dawning awareness that despite their reliable and dogged dependability, there are more rewarding airhead models.
Even with my fondness for the R80 from 20 odd years ago, I recalled a ride on my old bike some years after I had moved on to R1100 models. It was familiar - but disappointing. Not much urge and I was reaching for another gear when in top, etc, etc.

I have recently gone back to airheads and the gap is narrowed, to a point, by my R100RT (sans fairing), which is proving very enjoyable and suits most of my needs, (not enough weather protection of course, but I'm working on that :D).
The principle improvement for me is the bigger and more able motor, still 30HP down on my previous bike but very usable all the same and more so than the R80.

As has been observed on several similar threads, it depends what you are after.
Right now, the airhead for me has far more ticks in the margin than crosses.

My r100 mono makes me smile too..!!!

Maybe it's not running right or got other problems that make it unsatisfying to ride? My R90/6 makes me smile, as opposed to the R1200GS which was much better at everything but hasn't got quite the same feeling.

No it's riding and running like a 1980 bike and that is just not doing it for me Firstly, it's 33 years old but that makes me think

things that were right in the 70's And 80's should stay there. For example; lots of pubic hair & men wearing make up

maybe the insurance, maintenance and other attributesof owning a classic Bike generally outstrip the purchase price annually.

it's like meeting an old girlfriend 30 years on, she should be remembered fondly when she was lovely and New, all the bits and pieces where the biology charts said they should be, not just in the same county, and not with 30 years of someone else mistreating them, especially when a few quid could buy a much newer model from the far east!!

seriously its great little bike but the whole classic thing is just not going to be for me i will adore them from a far like i have been doing..I will be placing advert next week to sell the old girl on.I will stick with my 2013 GSA coming up for its 12k device and my New 2014 GSA ordered for next March:-)

I would have thought £2.5k for a 33 year old taxed and tested sweet running beauty with some bits is a fair deal ,will do some research and oh one a dude in the know later next week. I am not desperate to get rid so it can stay in a warm garage if not:-)
Some lover will appreciate its charm.

I would have thought so too, but if it's not a GS or an ST, it's unlikely to fetch more than about £1500... click

Did you see the R45 on that link? Made me laugh.

"Despite running and riding perfectly for ages, Murphys Law has stuck, and in the two days between last being used and relisting this bike, the front brakes have decided to stick on.

There is now a scuff on the right hand crash bar, and right hand rocker cover. These incidents are not entirely unconnected!"
