I bought a BMW top box - which is okay - but having bought it, now find there is no back rest option (should've asked first I guess) - anybody done same and found a solution?

Yes you Should

Yes you should've asked first, the BMW fitting is crap, get a Givi or Kappa, both have back rest and brake light options.

You didn't say which bike this is for - but if it's the regular R1150GS, the top-box used to have a habit of falling off. BMW did make a minor mod to the way the box fits, but I doubt that it's strong enough to support a pillion's back!

:(

Had a B*W topbox on my 1150 (now swapped for a Givi E52) and it had a backrest option with it. Albeit that it fitted lower down the case than was ideal. Obviously depends on which bike/topbox you have but it seems odd that there isn't one for yours.

You could always go to a local upholsterers (spelling ?) and get something made up for you. Shouldn't be too difficult or expensive.

The standard BMW topbox does not come with the backrest but you can buy it from BMW and it costs about £15. I have done loads of miles on mine and my pillion loves the backrest option, also in all those miles the top box has never become loose or fallen off, even when my pillion has fallen asleep using it for support.

Well- I obviously should've asked first!

Now I have have bought it I don't really want to buy another - it appears reasonably stable and the fixing appears solid enough - but there is a little flex in the mounting.

I will try BMW again - but they had told me there wasn't a backrest available - it is the BMW supplied std box for the GS1150.

Maybe the reason they say there isn't one is because of the 'falling off the back' stories???

Anyway thanks to all for your replies.

My BMW top box fell off last week for the 3rd and final time - it is a piece of shit that will never sit on my bike again. I only got it cos I though they could be key'd alike and they can't. If you have one that doesn't cause you a problem - congratulations, just don't ever leave home without the means of securing it to the bike should/when it does :(

KevinC the backrest option is the one issued for K1100 series.
so what dealer did not know that?Try Janet at Williams Manch.

the lowerpart Cecil describes sounds like the lowerpadded piece.
Which does help but fits halfway down the box.
bmw upper pad is enormous type seen on kseries with space for speakers.
I also have a small backrestpad made by Sargent fitted.
No problems withthe box falling off.

Judge ,dont chuck it in the pin! send me a pm with damage description and I might give you a donation to a set of Vern's .;)

I've tried to clarify the above, and spoken to Clarks in B'ham this afternoon.
There is no backrest available for the current BMW top box fitment for the GS.

Podger some be some communication problem:D
Maybe try this.
ask your dealer to look up the Kseries Accessories
look for the topbox on k1100 and you will see the curved pad that fits approx halfway down the box and the larger pad that is used to house radio speakers.;)

Here is a pic of the backrest fitted to the topbox, I believe Colt is correct in that it is one for the K1200 topbox.

Hurray, thanks Cecil.I Must get a camera so I can show piccies.
I'll have to learn how to post them then:)

It is the backrest pad I have but is for the earlier K1100 series not k12.

I've a standard BMW top box fitted to my GS, & covered 37.5k miles on it without problem. It's concerning to see that others have had problems with them falling off, maybe the time to loop a couple of straps around it for extra security.

Like the idea of a back rest, the wife has been on about having one since I got the bike, but I was told the same story, "they don't make them for the GS, sir", well now I know where to look.

Cheers.

Jeff.

"they don't make them for the GS, sir",
I think i should get commision fee from all these parts specialists:D
the same ones that said the ali adv topbox doesnt fit the standard GS150;)
