BMW Used Bike Warrany - what's covered?

I have just noticed my bike is still covered by it's one year used bike warranty.

At the moment the bike seems to have some strange electrical gremlins (see my GS1100 wont rev past 6000 rpm thread). I'm worried that as the rev counter doesnt seem to be functioning as it should, that I may not have the safety net of a rev limiter, and could damage the engine if I miss a gear etc. Also the ABS lights come on when the bike is revved hard in the lower gears. Does anyone know if the BM used bike warrant covers these sort of problems. I recieved no information from either the dealer or BMW regarding what is and is not covered.

The warranty is fairly good if I recall correctly, but since the fact that it hasn't expired that means the bike has been yours for less than a year I'd wheech it back to them anyway and ask them to diagnose what the problem is. The bike clearly has a problem which is fairly fundamental so there's a good chance it will get fixed under warranty but be prepared to argue if they are difficult.

I assume you got it from Mottorrad Central in Glasgow (guessing by your "Location" line). Even if you didn't I'd be tempted to give them a call as the threads in the "Dealers" sections suggest they are particularly good at what they do (this may, of course, no longer be true as I haven't checked the threads for a while). The warranty is good at any BMW dealership, I believe.

B*W extended waranties are non transferable so unless you were given the warranty by the dealer it may not be covered anyway. When I bought an extended warranty a couple of years back I was stunned by the fact of how little was covered - when I eventually read the info - would probably have been a waste of money if I'd have needed to claim. The extended warranties now cost a small (no, large) fortune so hopefully they'll be better - if anyones daft enough to buy one

I,m on my 2nd extended warrenty now , first year got me a new ABS "lump"
and had a new clutch on this years. plus every time it's serviced they normaly do msomething , new bearings, seals etc. plus it includes europian breakdown etc. worth it for me,

Hmm, seems like the warranty might not be worth the paper it's written on then. Yes the dealer provided the warranty. Trotsky I'll give them a call and hope for the best.

Are you confusing a 'Used Bike Warranty' with the 'Extended'?

The extended warranty is available to bikes that have reached the end of the initial warranty period and can be continued only if the warranty period is unbroken. The (now) huge amount of money continues the 'New Bike' warranty and break-down cover. I believe it is transferrable.

BMW do the same for their cars. I kept up the extended warranty on a 7 Series until I sold it. The warranty went with the car to the new owner.

Incidentally, it was less for that 7 Series than it is now for the bikes!

Not sure if you know but they asked for £595 when mine expired recently, but it did look like a lot was covered.

It is transferable - just had the paralever bearing on my bike replaced under a warranty that Ming bought and passed on to me with the bike.

Well I just received my BMW warranty renewal documentation this morning. It does seem quite comprehensive, and stated that you are covered against "the cost of mechanical or electrical repairs or replacment required as a result of manufacturing or material defect". I guess it's how one really defines material defect!

Unfortunately it then states "that as the bike's age and milleage increases, more components will reach the end of their servicable life, and will not be reimbursed under this warranty". Seems a bit of a get out clause to me.

The bike is booked in tommorow, I reckon it's either a duff rev counter (material defect or wear and tear at 33K miles?) or some other electrical gremlin (hall sensor?). So for £659 pa (that's what it says ) we'll see how good the BMW warranty really is
