I have just taken the bodywork off my 2017 GS. (fitting some new lights!) Whilst doing this I noticed that the bolt lengths and types were different. Some have a shoulder on and there are four different lengths. I started to record where the various bolts had come from. However after I replaced all the bodywork I had two bolts left over! I don't think my recording was too accurate. Doh.

I don't suppose anyone here has actually recorded which bolts go where? I could take the damn thing apart again. Everything seems to be fitting well, so I've no idea where they have come from.

Not from where the beak attaches to the tank are they - these have collars in.

If you go onto rainbow BMW parts they list all the bolts and the lengths in the description, might help.

Have you checked if the bolts inside the side panels/fairing have been put back.

I particular, the front plastic fairing has bolts that go inside to outside.

Thanks lads, I've checked everything you can see from the outside, even up inside the side panels, it must be a couple of bolts that are covered up by another panel, bugger, looks like it will have to all come apart again.......

Unless I’m mistaken the BMW dealer sites have had a makeover and the parts site seems to have vanished?

Maybe for the radiator guards or the ones under the beak above the radiator, or the plastic next to the windshield

As a guide, I’ve found that the smaller shoulder bolts fit where one thickness of panel is secured and the longer shoulder ones fit where two panels overlap.

Doesn't help the OP but when I took the panels off mine last month I put a large sheet down on the garage floor and put the panels on it one by one, replicating their position on the bike replacing all the bolts in their places as I went. That made sure the correct bolts went back in the right places without having to try and remember where each one came from :beerjug:

Aaah, wondered what the logic was, that may help track the blighter down, thanks.

found it! Middle of the beak, both sides

Thanks for the tips, helped me track them down, especially by looking at the parts list & pictures.

tip; I used a carboard box to stick them in when I removed them this time.
