Oversimplifying things?

If your bored with it F*** it off out.
They are for fun.
We are adventure motorcyclists it matters not what you ride (AT ALL) Its where you ride.
I do know the greif of being torn between different types of bike though. I think it's like Labour before child birth. You have to go through it.
Unless you have enough money to just buy anything you fancy and not worry about it.
It's great once you make your mind up though.
My advice is ignore everyones advice and especialy ignore all the people that will tell you how uncomfortable, unreliable, heavy etc your chosen bike is.
Ride it like you stole it. :thumb2

change the feckin awful seat colou for starters - EEuuuwww

that'll make you love it a bit more - get a sargeant or corbin, change the bars and you've effectively got a 'different; bike - those are the things you touch and feel as you're riding

you could start by a test ride and then you'd have a better idea :nenau

lay off him on the colour :spitfire

That's the superior black/red combo :augie

It does sound like you're bored with the riding, not the ride.....UWGoat is right, go out and ride it somewhere new and challenging.

Take it down to Morocco and it'll amaze and impress you with what it can do.......I might even be able to suggest a company who can show you a good time out there ;)

Dont get the KTM 990Adv. Do yourself the power of good and take a test ride on a 950 Supermoto. I did and bought one straight away (going from a 950 Adv from a 12GS from an 1150GS).

It is without doubt the most brilliant bike I have ever had. Totally, utterly fantastic. Tours, trackdays, commuting, back roads. Anything you like. Absolutely stunning, and so much fun you'll be in a different world. And it has proper carbs.

Great!!!

I just traded in my 1150GS for an 03 950ADV and am loving the KTM. That said, the 1150 was good, just not my cuppatea (and not a V twin with twin Akras :D!). Just go with your heart not your head, and certainly not other people's heads! If you don't like whatever you buy, just sell it again. OK, you might lose a few quid, but better that than spending your time regretting what you might have done. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Went from an 1150 GSA to 950 SM, best move I ever did only problem I've had is going home ;);) its so addictive.Tobers is right it will do everything I've now got a redundant sports bike:eek:.enjoy what ever you choose:thumb

My head is a shed. Ask me in 5 minutes and I'll have come to a different decision.

Its a KTM day again today:rolleyes:

Mounter's (the local KTM dealer) have said that my 1150 won't make £4k as a part-ex because of the 'astronomical' mileage!! I tried to explain that in Boxer terms its only just 'run in', but he was having none of it!!

Another issue is the lack of a BMW dealership in these parts - a bike with a warranty entails a day off work and a trip to either Stroud or Bristol, for servicing or 'issues'.

Thank God for Mike Pearce at Cardiff Motorrad. If he ever shuts up shop we will be left high and dry in this part of Wales.

So what happened? I saw the 990Adv at the NEC and have to say it looked the business.

Some good advice on here. But I'm stuck with the old nail for a bit longer. Could be worse.

:blast

I know how you feel..

Help

I'm sick of the sight of my 1150 after 38k and 5 years ownership.

I will be test riding a 990ADV soon ... I love the look and feel of the bike ... but a new one is my bike plus £5K:eek:

Or I could spend £2k on new shocks/seat and a few other mods to improve the 1150 ...

I just can't stand the thought of all that HP .... but then, we only live once ...

Talk me out of it, chaps.

Got bored of my 1150GS too.
It needed £1000 worth done to it.
Test rode the 990ADV, and initial thoughts were WOW!!!

Came back down to earth when I realised It would loose the WOW factor very quickly, expensive regular servicing, depreciation, lack of accesories, and dealer servicing. I have broken down twice abroad, and BMW was not a problem. Don't know enough about KTM.

If the dealer wants a sale he may let you have it for a week!!!!
Then decide. For me, an hour wasn't enough. 1200GS now and I LOVE IT!!!

Good luck!!!!

I had a 990 for a while (and ridden a ton of 950's). Its a fine bike with a hot rod motor in comparison to the GS. But, it was a pain in the arse (literally the worst seat I have ever sat on).

I'd get a headache from the buffeting after about thirty minutes. The brakes are crap and it runs very hot. Its also expensive to run and service.

If I lived close to the wilderness and was going off road a lot I would consider it. But overall I think the 1200 Adventure is a bike that's easier to live with.

I could live with either the Superduke or SM though :thumb

Thanks for your input, one and all. FWIW I've decided to change the shocks on my GS and carry out a few extra bits and bobs to freshen it up. I'll be looking to change it is Sept 09 I reckon (won't be to a 1200 tho).

Just a few responses from my experiences :augie

it was a pain in the arse

I found the later 950 gel seats to be better, but in any case an Airhawk pad turned mine into an easy 500+ miler.

I'd get a headache from the buffeting after about thirty minutes.

I've found it to be sensitive to helmets. True, the standard screen is not kind to the TourX wearer, but it's fine with a 'normal' road lid. Like the 1150GS and tobinators there is a wealth of knowledge out in Orange Crush-land about how to deal with this, including cut-down screens.

The brakes are crap

Haven't noticed this, mine work fine :nenau

it runs very hot

The OE end cans with built-in catalytic convs do get very hot, but replacement with after-market cans sorts the problem.

Its also expensive to run and service.

After the first service (which is a biggy ) I found it no more expensive to service than BMW main dealer, and insurance was no more.

I could live with either the Superduke or SM though :thumb

Just a light-hearted dig, so please don't take this personally, but most of your negative comments about the adv would apply to these too, no? :D

FFS ignore the doubters on here and go for it. It matters not a jot what the majority of riders say as its in your heart that you make the decision. How many of the owners on here actualy ever ride their bikes to their true capability..a very small % age. There are those that have bought their first BM and think that they are the best bike in the world and will say the same of their next bike, and the next, and the next. I have owned a 1100, a 1150, an ADV and even restored an Airhead last winter and they all leave me with great memories but I refuse to be herd led and prefer to make my own mind up. Sure there are those on here that will rise up at the thought of someone saying they will never need the endless TT parts that they put on their bikes, overland kit, sat nav, gel seats, extra lights( now theres a larf if the bikes so bloody good) and all to commute a few miles or go to a meet at the weekends to stand around and tell tales of daring and do on an A Road somewhere in the uK. Even seen some with awnings, wigwams, porches on tents etc christ they look like they should be parked in the caravan enclosure not on a bike area of a site. Anyhow, just got for it if thats what you want....no doubt you wiil have fond memories of the KTM, the BM and any other bike you own in the past and the future.:augie:blast

Agreed. Buy what you want, ride where you want, carry what you want. Camp if you want, 5 Star hotel if you want. Ride to Cape Town, or crate the bike out their and fly on down and just cruise around.

Just dont forget to disparage those who chose another way......:augie:augie:augie

Melton you talk perfect sense but I've decided to hang fire, I don't have the disposable cash to change at the mo.

Took the GS over the Beacons on Sunday and its clear that the shocks are U/S, so a set of replacement Wilbers it is. I can keep this bike until next year when I'll be ready for a change and the next generation of KTM enters the market place.

Or maybe an 800 GS ....:augie
