So I took the front wheel off and sprayed the forks with Smoothrite.
I might put it back together tomorrow, or possibly leave it for a few days to harden.

Might even see if I've got any clear vinyl in the garage, and put some of that on the front faces.

Probably put some Waxoyl under the fork bridge before putting the mudguard back on.

Did you strip them or sand them first? I'd be interested in seeing the results and whether I might do it too. :thumb2

I wire brushed them by hand, I don't know where I got it from, but I have a wire brush that has a softish backing & the bristles are about 10mm long. Seemed to do a good job, then sprayed them acid etch, then 4 coats sprayed on. Last coat:rolleyes: I was too heavy handed, it ran a bit.

I'll post some photos tomorrow.

Put the wheel back on, just about to torque the nut up, I thought that the bike looked a bit macho, bugger, front mudguard grimacing away in the corner:blast

Front calipers apart and cleaned, a little bit of corrosion on about 3 of the 8 pistons, didn't seem any worse than it was last time I did the job. Red rubber & copper greased, ready for winter. Now of course I will need to do the rear sometime.

photos to follow of the lower forks, paint is still soft. DAMHIK:blast

Incidentally, I smeared copper grease in any threads & holes before I started painting.

Hmm, I'd thought of that.:P But, Most of what you saw was just accumulated mud hidden by the mudguard. Corrosion is minor compared to the fork legs.

What they looked like previously.

I did exactly the same earlier in the year but I used silver engine enamel.

Fork legs and bridge now look new. Pity about the rest of the bike :blast

It took longer to clean and mask everything than it did to do the painting. It was 50C in direct sun on my driveway so the paint dried VERY quickly between coats :D

I think I'll be leaving it in the garage for a while, I'd rather the paint had hardened than risk messing it up by using it tomorrow.

Looks great to me! The fork legs aren't too bad on mine (although probably need doing) but the fork bridge is pretty nasty looking.
