Anyone around Embra got one I can borrow? Putting a new chain on the Transalp bef heading for the Manx and have always had shaft driven boxers up to now. And bef anyone from sarf of the border makes a comment ...

1. Yes, I am a tight git.

2. I'll be back on a boxer soon so am even more reluctant to splash out on something I will be unlikely ever to use again.

Not so tight that I wouldn't stretch to a wee swallie in return for use of said tool for a day or so though!

Peter,

The first Sprocket Locking Washer is ready, I'll hopefully have the 'spare' finished tomorrow.

I'd put up pictures but Photobucket seems to be playing 'Silly-Bs' and the 'Login' tab doesn't work :nenau.

I'll be at the Carole Nash Bike Show at Ingliston on Saturday, if you're there I'll hand over the bits for you to try (unless you really want to come to my shed :augie).

Bob.

Thanks Bob. May see you on Saturday. I hope it's better than the Scottish Show though which has become dire. If not, next week at the shed.

Photobucket lives :thumb:

The locking washer (is it a 'washer' if its 8mm thick??), this one is made from 'Type-316' stainless. The next one will be from 'Type-304' Stainless which is a bit softer and is maybe a bit more forgiving.

Here it is on the 15-tooth sprocket, it should fit the larger sprocket just as well.

The component parts:

For those wondering what the connection is between this and the thread title . . Peter is fitting a larger sprocket so needs to lengthen the chain and while we're at it we're fitting an 'Owners' Club recommended mod' to help keep the sprocket on :D.

Hopefully it will get him to 'The Island' for the MGP later this month :thumb.

(And back again :augie).

Bob.

And quite a few thousand miles after that judging by the quality of the work Bob. A thing of beauty! Thanks.:clap

Not in Edinburgh but if you fancy a trip over to Glasgow I've a good chain riveter bought to do my sons CB chain.

Second locking washer made, but not cut in half yet as I can't machine the cut halves.

If the first one fits I'll divide the second, at present I can put it back in the lathe and adjust it if necessary.

I have stamped the front faces as the recesses are of different depths ;).

Hopefully see you tomorrow, Peter :thumb.

Well, 'Scotboxer' was at my place today and fitted the locking ring to the standard sprocket.

"Yabbadabbadoo" - it fits :bounce1.

A happy Scotboxer putting the cover and gear lever back on :thumb.

This is what Honda use to hold the sprocket on  - the teeth fit over the splines and then the plate is lowered on one side to jam the teeth into the splines on the shaft. It lasts for less than 1,000 miles. Its more like a 'Wing and a Prayer' than an engineering solution :barf.

The larger sprocket will be fitted when the chain splitter & breaker have been sorted out.

Now to cut the 'spare' locking ring in half :D.

Bob.

All good so far Bob. The issue seems to be lateral play of the sprocket on the shaft which allows the sprocket to bump against the retaining ring. If , at the factory, Honda placed a spacer or shims to take up the play then their "engineering solution" would probably work well enough. Another case of bean counting V engineering, it seems. Your bespoke solution is the "Saville Row" option though! Thanks again!
