Hi folks

Just wondered if anybody had any thoughts as to what could be the problem with my friends boxer cup rep.

He only bought it last week, went to start it up today, and 'click'. as the bike is an 03 (7k miles). He bought a new battery for it, tried it again and 'click' the bike is on an Optimate anyway, the lights are all bright etc.

The engine turns over freely enough when rocked in gear. Are there any known historic problems with starters / solenoids etc or does anybody have any further thoughts on what to check?.

The bike ran great last weekend (see photo below), not that that makes any difference :blast

Cheers in advance :thumb2

Sticky starter solenoid??? due to lack of use? Take off side cover over starter and rap with a soft faced mallet whilst pushing the starter button? What happens? FerCrysake don't try to bump start it

If no response Take off the starter and have a look in the main motor section perhaps the magnets have fallen off?? A common fault with the D6RA variant valeo starter

NOTE disconnect the negative lead from the battery and insulate it if you're going to try to remove the starter

I prefer to disconnect the +ve myself, but the problem does seem to point to the starter.
Make sure both +ve and -ve connections are clean and tight as well as the spade terminal on the starter.

You can see and touch the -ve on the Boxercup and remove it to From memory the +ve is obscured by rear part of the tank

I was always taught -ve off every time first and back on last
It's to do with loosening and tightening the securing bolts,
If you do +ve first the spanner can strike the chassis and arc out IF however you do the -ve first then the spanner can dance merrily on the metal work without fear of an Arc :aidan:aidan:aidan

You are not wrong there.
A couple of pints and i'm a menace with a spanner.:beer::eek:

It's an evil bike, the BoxerCup ... I had one for a year but sold it on after not being able to take it anymore! Went back to the trusty GS which had spent the year under wraps ... a quick service and as good as new!

The fairing panels on the BC need to come off just to reach the battery! It's a pain! The battery was always a problem, especially as it was a small one ... fit the battery for the ABS model ... larger but still fits. Yes, I know that you've fitted a new battery already ... it was fully charged before being fit, wasn't it? I've made that mistake before!

Good luck

(but tell him to get a GS instead)!

Nick

Contrary to HongKongNick.............

I've done 18,000 miles on my BoxerCup, and think it's a great bike :thumb

Does sport and touring really well and I've never had a problem with the battery, starting, or oil consumption................. :nenau

Sure, if you bin it - it'll cost a fortune to replace the carbonfibre bits................. but no modern bike is exactly cheap in that area. :rob

Al :D

Thanks again everyone... I'm going round at about 1 to give him a hand, now I will seem 'cleverer' than him :stupid :D:D:D
