How many years do people on here think the boxer motor design has got left in it, a chap I work with recons this is the final nail in the coffin for the boxer motor “I personally hope not” it would be a shame to see the faithful boxed be consigned to history because of a few eco hippie in brussels reeling of mountains of bureaucratic nonsense. :blagblah :blagblah :blagblah

Only my opinion, sorry in advance if this offends anyone..........

The air cooled boxer engine is donkeys years old 1920s or around there somewhere, and it hasnt really changed that much in design really...........the old saying "if it aint broke dont fix it" thing creeps in here.

But how about a water cooled boxer unit, would it be more able to make more power ? would it be lighter or heavier .......no bulky cylinder fins ect. but then a radiator, waterpump, hoses ect. im just throwing ideas in the jar here.
With all the euro emmission stuff and green squad (be nice to moths party) a think the old engine will have to go threw a big redesign sooner or later......probably sooner i would say.........we shall have to wait and see :augie

Goldwings have a water cooled boxer engine. I don't think there's any emission problem there.

The only thing that will stop the BuMW boxer is emission regs which are now getting ridiculous.

They will have to be looking at something else in the next few years I reckon.

I think it will have to go water cooled pretty soon which isnt all that bad a thing really. You just cant get air cooled engine emissions down very easy because of the uneven cooling and the lack of temp control. Oil cooling is a reasonable attempt but it isnt fully implemented in the BM engine specially when you look at the old GSXR engine. No idea if it would add weight but probably although the design of the parts could be changed as their expansion rates would alter so could be made lighter. More power, also yes but why? Especially in a GS where it doesn't need it. Water cooling might also allow for a bore increase which if done right could give more torque for the GS but more power for the HP range so for power junkies it would be good. I remember years ago it was all over for the boxer engine and they went oil cooled and 4 valve. If BM want to keep making boxers and I am pretty sure they do then they will find a way.

What he said..!

BMW have tried to wean us off Boxers before and had to reintroduce them because people didn’t want the then K series. Who knows, maybe they will water cool it (and fit a belt/chain drive disguised as a shaft…) :augie

If they are gonna water cool, I hope they push the boat out and make it a turbo diesel.

Monster torque and a 600 mile tank range anyone ?

"diesel bike !!!" what ever next ?..............but yes it could happen, diesel engines have come along way, no longer are they hard to start ,knocking ,clattering old smokers, some diesels are quite refined, good power producers and as you say mega economy..........not everyone wants to blast round at hairy speeds, there already is some diesel bikes around ,do a search on utube

Diesel bikes.......its the future a tell ya......................knock knock knock.....2nd knock knock knock knock 3rd knock knock knock knock knock 4th and so forth:augie

thats basically a large PC CPU cooler. Its a solution but I cant see it being the right solution. To work properly it would involve getting even cooling over the entire head. This would be very difficult to do because of the shape so you would get hot and cold spots which isnt good. Water cooling is pretty much a pool of coolant all the way round the combustion chamber so has pretty uniform cooling. This makes the head casting thermally and mechanically stable which is a good thing.

HP2

I think th Hp2 unit in the new 1200 is going to add zest into the Boxer unit

i think most of the 1200 guys now are wondering when there going to start smelling of wee :blast (remember the airheads)

long live the Boxer:thumb
