On the road, for now:-)
Any advice would be gratefully received, I have just ordered some braided lines for my 1998 1100, I am intending to fit them myself, is there anything that I need to be aware of?? I assume it should be simple enough, fit the lines, bleed the top line at the abs pump, then continue with the calipers, please correct me if I'm wrong.

My other query was my starter motor, in the past she has done the spinning thing where it doesnt engage. I took it apart and cleaned it up which has lasted about a year or so, now it has started again. I am aware you can change the brushes, which is what it probably needs but have no idea where to get them, again I am intending to fit them myself...........simples...........hopefully.:Motomartin:Motomartin:ukgser:ukgser:adv::adv::tarka:tarka

Why don't we keep riding.........east

I bled my brakes using some big plastic syringes when I replaced my brake pipes, attatched them to the caliper nipples and bled from the bottom up, if your starter is spinning but not engaging it most likely needs cleaning again.

Thanks for the speedy reply Stew........Ive just asked another question on your alt belt thread.........cheers.....nige.:Motomartin

I put all new lines on my 1100 and bleeding was easy. I did find that, because of the physics of the thing, the ABS wouldn't bleed properly until I had bled the calipers.

So, bleed the ABS until 90% of the bubbles are gone then bleed the calipers.

Then, go back to the ABS and get the last few bubbles out.

I got my old 1150 starter rebuilt locally a couple of years ago for about £45, according to the bloke that did it the brushes and windings in the BMW bike starter are shared with Valeo parts for older Peugeot 1.3 petrol engined starters.

thanks

Chaps.........thanks for the speedy replies.......thats great.......my new lines arrived today and I have now found that one of the threads on my right hand side caliper has seen better days and hadn't been holding the bolt tightly at all.....looks like i'm gonna have to get a new thread wound in to it somehow.......it never rains but it poors......I'm sure it will be fine but is annoying as it will delay my new lines going on.........happy days:Motomartin:Motomartin

What bolt thread has gone? If its the caliper mounting bolt to fork leg then there are cheap/easy fixes. As stated before... if your motor is spinning then it won't be the brushes but the engagement mechanism.

Threaded bolt

Yes it is a caliper thread that has seen better days...........called a few places today to see if anybody could heli-coil for me.........I got laughed at as apparently there's no call for it!!!!!!!!!!why do they make thread repair kits then bonehead I thought.......I'm probably gonna buy a heli coil kit n fit it myself.....if you want a job done do it yourself I suppose.

As for the starter it played up a year ago or so, I stripped it and cleaned it, it was fine though you could see the brushes were worn......shes done 67,000 and much of europe.......poor thing.:Motomartin
