Brake lever free play varies

The front brake on my R100GS works well enough but there is a lot of free play most of the time. Sometimes (less often now) it ha much less free travel which can take you a bit by surprise. I can't pump the brake up so assume it's not air in the system.

Is it just a sticky piston in the caliper?

Look at the pinhole breather in the bottom of the reservoir, make sure it's clear!
