Just had a call from CWs where my bike has been taken since it wouldn't start the other day. they have said that the fuel pump has seized and that is the first one they have seen that happen to. A new fuel pump needs to be fitted and that will be £345 plus 2 hrs labour including the check to see what the problem was.

Looking at a £500 bill for a new fuel pump....

Now that I have picked myself up off the floor, does anyone have any other suggestions or do I just need to foot the bill and get it fixed.

2003 1150GS 34000 miles......

At the very least, buy a manual and fit it yourself and save on the labour money.
You can always see if somebody has a spare one on here (FS & Wanted section) or from a breakers or even PM Steptoe.

haven't got access to the manual at work but can anyone advise if it is a complex job - I need to get the bike home from CWs which would be a pain.... but worth it if I can easily fit it myself

Also need to phone CWs and cancel the order quickly if they havent ordered it already

Quick update - the fuel pump has burnt out the loom and plate that it is all attached to - so that is £179 for the pump plus £165 for the plate/loom....

fuel pump is in the tank and barely more grief to fit than changing the filter.

as long as the access plate bolts undo ok, it's quite straightforward.

oh.

well to save any money now, you really need second hand bits :(

they have it in bits presumably & will charge for what they have done. might be just as well to take the pill and let them finish the job :nenau

Hi Bateman,
Can't be too complex, I've had the fuel pump off mine (1100) a couple of times in the past. Main thing I'd say, be gentle with things, especially the studs that the cover fits on. Make sure you give them a good dose of WD40/De-Icer before loosening hte nuts, I managed to break one off mine. Got away with one, but any more would probably have meant a new tank. I found the instructions in the Haynes manual easy enough to follow.

Edit: Hmmm, with that new bit of info, I think like Cookie...'Oh'...

Dave.

Another edit: I can perhaps understand the loom bit, but how does it burn out a mounting plate? Anyone on here with more experience enlighten us?

Thanks for all the replies. Because the bike is actually out at CWs and they have it stripped down from when they identified the problem, I think the best option is to let them finish the job. The time and effort to somehow recover the bike and get it back to my place and then fit the parts would be high.

I'm not sure whether I could easily source second hand parts for it either.

Just phoned them up to do the brake fluids while they are at it - another £85 quid bu I can't do that job myself either.

I'll do it for £400, including walking there and back and still be a happy man.

how did the fuel pump burn out the loom and the plate it is attached to?

I have no idea. CWs don't seem to know either - I spoke with Darren and he said it was the first he had seen for years and doesn't know why this has happened. They tested everything and unfortunately my warranty has expired. I think it is being fixed tomorrow assuming the parts are delivered.

:eek:onyack I would have given you a piggy back if it brought the cost down from the £500 I am going to have to pay.. I did think about having the recovery take it back to my house and I would work through with what limited skills I had to figure out what the problem is then search around for second hand parts but I guess when I had it sent to CWs I was hoping it was going to be something slightly less expensive. They have quoted 1.5hrs to fit it - presumably the tank has to come off, replace the plate/loom/pump and fit the tank back, plus the 30 mins to diagnose the problem initially. Seems quite a lengthy job :nenau
