Hi all,
I have a GS 04 1200 , have found a leaking seal on one of the front brake calipers , making enquiries about a service kit it seems you have to buy a complete caliper kit = 4 pistons + o rings @ £60 + P P. For possible 2 o rings that's a lot of money. Has anybody got part of a kit they no longer need.
Models covered # GS 04,08,10 / GSA 06,08,10 / RT 05,10 :bow

Check its not a hose banjo that's leaking.

In my experience with bike brakes, corrosion in the seal grooves has caused the seals to jam the pistons before they leak: Ive never had a split seal but really bad corrosion can cause the caliper to leak. Strip the caliper before ordering spares - it might only need new seals.

Edit
Ive not done a proper check but seal kits at Motorworks look to be under £20.

New pistons should not be needed. Unless they are badly corroded below the seal line.

Hi , Thanks for your interest, its definitely not the hose, there is just a smear from one of the pots, as I said in the post you can only buy a complete kit, which is 4 pots + seals per caliper, price £56 + PP ( including Motorworks , have spoken to them earlier today ) Although the bike is 04 its only done 20K. That's why I am asking if anybody has had to buy a kit and only required part of.

BRA74607

That's the kit for the rear caliper, he needs a front and there isn't one listed for the Brembo fitted as standard. There is one listed for the HP2 Enduro, BRA51956 but I don't have enought knowledge to say that it will fit. I looked for the same thing and couldn't find one, in the end I stripped them down and gave them a good clean, the work as good as new now.
Well they did until I posted this reply :D

Hi Bendy

OP

Here's an idea...

You were expecting someone to have bought a kit, used the bits they needed and to have the other bit you need ready to sell to you.

Why not do the same yourself but in reverse? Buy the kit, extract the bit you want and flog the balance on?

Hi Wapping, that's the next planned step, going to wait until after this weekend, if nothing comes up will order a service kit :tears and replace whats needed , possible try to sell the rest or but it away in the spares / repair cupboard, who knows 1 seal leaked maybe another might.
When I bought the bike it had only covered 6,500 m in 8 years, lots of standing around, maybe the reason the seal started leaking, it shouldn't happen, but !!!

Thanks to all that responded to my cry for help :clap

Just replace the lot and you'll have a caliper that should last another 8 years**. Make absolutely sure any/all alloy oxide is cleaned out of the seal grooves. Fill the seal grooves with red brake grease (sachets can be got from auto spares factors) and use a smear of the same on the seals. I personally avoid silicone grease because its too slippery and can cause brakes to bind. The pads only move a fraction of a mm with the seals providing the return spring action. If the grease is too slippy, the pistons slip through the seals and stay there causing the brake to rub.

When the pistons are in fill the space under the dust seals with red grease before fitting the dust seals. This reduces the risk of trapped moisture festering away quietly and seeping into the working seal grooves.

I recently did some push bike Hope M4 brakes with new seals and pistons. They were much less cost than the Brembo full seal kit (and a lot more fiddly).

**The other brakes will probably be going the same way so budget on doing the job again quite soon. At least the rear can be done with a seal kit.

Jus in case someone throws a wobbly. I HAVE used silicone grease on a brake caliper and I had to do the job all over again because it ruined the seals by making them too slippery. Red brake grease is fine. Silicone grease isnt.

I called MotorWorks this morning. Seals kits and full callipers are available for the rear brake. Piston and seal kits are available only for front brakes.

I spoke to Dave today at PowerHouse. He says new pistons are NOT available for the rear caliper from BMW or Motorworks, but he can machine stainless replacements for £30 each. Corroded pistons do not necessarily mean a replacement caliper is needed.

You know why it's called brake grease ?. It's for using on brakes :D

But I had some silicone grease in the shed. To coin a phrase "how bad can it be". I ruined two sets of OEM seals and had to wet/dry the pistons to get the stuff off.
