Tyre comparisons

".....I fancy tryin out the new Michelin Anakee 2's." As a matter of interest these were 6th out of 8 in the Motorrad test - but second best (to Tourances) in the wet. 'Outomunch' asks "Why do people fit 'trail type' tyres to a GS that never goes off road " A good question which brings us to "why do people BUY a GS if they never go off road." I would NEVER dream of going off road on my GS's ,even after 6 years, because if you go off road you must expect to drop the bike and that could be an expensive experiment and if you are alone you may not be able to pick it up! But on poor road surfaces, and there are plenty around where I live, the GS is far better than the 'ordinary' machines and that is why I have one (The fact that it looks much more impressive than, say, a R1200R, is just an added bonus!)

I've always been of the impression that the Tourence type tyres are cheaper and generally last longer than the road orientated offerings. They also look the part in keeping with the style of the bike.

Brian, you say you'd never take your GS off road because your worried about the possible consequences of dropping the bike. Well thats fair enough, but you might be surprised to know that your probably less likely to do expensive damage to the big twin GSs than to little the 650s.
Personally I think anyone in their right mind isn't likely to go any where remotely dodgie on them without at least one other rider who is prepared to help retrieve it from the hedge.

I personally use TKCs all the time. They are a good price, wear well, give good mileage equal to any other tyre I've used on the GS and they grip well In the twisties 'wet or dry' too.

Ultimately though as a bonus, they look better than any other tyre (Karoos excepted) you'll ever see on the GS's of all ages :thumb2

'wings....

I have wings on mine. Previous Dunlop 607s and Annakees.

The wings are the best I've had on yet. Predictable and good in all conditions.

Might try 020s next but, spoils a trailie looks putting out and out road tyres on IMHO. Hence my buying 'wings. They look the part but work like 020s and last longer.

I'm more than happy with them, but running them at slightly lower pressures than you would other tyres works best for them from my exprience.

my self have the wings i have tryed the anakee did not like them cornering hard did not feel stable from rear the wings give me more confidence when going hard especialy on the track can silde the foot pegs nicely on the ground my 2c worth

Have had annakees and tourance and I must admit I really feel safer on wings 501/502. Can get really low with wife on as well. Have not tried in the wet yet. My 5c. (no more 2c):augie

What people don't take it to account is what tyre preasures are you runing suspension setings its has got a lot to with the way a bike behaves. Some tyres need a stiffer suspesnsion or softer!MY 8c worth thanks

I've only ever used Tourances on my GS, the last front tyre was defective and replaced by Metzeler due to sidewall cracking after low mileage. No problems with peg-down roundabout surfing (fastway pegs on high setting), wet riding and moderate off-roading and the wear rates are fantastic compared to sports rubber.

On the subject of suspension settings, I just tweaked the damping a mere 2 clicks on my Wilbers shocks and the difference is stunning, she now floats like a buttery and stings like a bus. There's a lot to be said for running the correct pressures and having correctly dialled-in suspension.

If it ain't broke and all that......the next set will be Tourances, unless I buy a new 1200Adv and try TKC's.

As I recently discovered with my latest tyre choice :thumb2
