I have a very early Rider 1. Thought I had been very clever by switching to a new locking mount (dont recall which) before the pins "drilled" but it has now got me as well. Even with the new mount they have worn in the end.

Too old to go back to Tom Tom. But before I buy a new unit (Garmin this time) is there not a better solution? If the power went in through the "car" jack plug it would be fine. But you cant get at that when it is in the mount. I have read some pretty amazing engineering solutions to various problems on this site, I was hoping someone would come up with something for this one. Remove the back and pass a wire through the unit? Might not be as waterproof but the TT does the job and £500 for a new one because a couple of pins fail seems a bit excessive? Or should I just forget it and pay up?

Its unlikely any third party would look at this for an older outdated model.

A Touratech or Wunderlich have cradle which incorporat the Rider 1 cradle for pin contact will be at least £100+ whereas you can still get a new original Tom Tom Rider 1 cradle (original mount kit) from www.buybits.com (cost £23.49 + VAT) plus Egon of this parish made a rubbery strap for Rider 1 which was successful, also.

there was a chinese guy selling brand new tt rider 1s for £50 delivered for the unit. It didnt come with any maps or accesories but thats all you would need. Alternatively there are repair services offering to do the pin repairs for around £50 also. They replace the entire connector block.

you could replace the metal pads in the unit with sprung contacts if you were pretty handy with a soldering iron.

My mate just got a second hand touratech mount for £50 and its much better, cant go anywhere. I see them appear on ebay quite often.

Thanks all. Nothing seems ideal and as you say it is now an outdated unit. I have been here before - you throw more cash it and still end up with something second rate. I will hand the TT1 over to my wife and buy a new Garmin. Thanks again.
