Goose - PM'd you (oo-er missus :gosh)

Malky,

Thanks for the advice,

The network option had occurred to me, we have two machines + a work laptop with an ethernet card, the oldest desktop is a dual boot windows 95/98 266 and would be fine for browsing. A wireless set up would be easier, I will need about 40 ft of cable to run between the 2 desktops, one is upstairs and the other downstairs in an extension, but I assume this would be more expensive.

I started looking in www.adslguide.org,, looked at NAT and it went straight over my head at first, but I am getting there. Any other suggestions for a good beginners guide to networks or is most of what I need there? It looks like all I need for a peer-to-peer is the router/modem + the Ethernet cards and the cabling.

At the moment I use Zone Alarm as a software firewall, free with a magazine. I looked at the Solway 715 which seems to imply it has an inbuilt firewall, does yours ?

Oh yes FW NAT lovely jubbly - hell "I am turning into a rhyming Greg M"
www.solwise.co.uk is worth a look and keep reading adslguide eventually it'll start to make more sense.

BTW : One on my machines is only a 200 PentPro with 64 Meg since moving to 2K professional the thing flys as a Print/File Server and occasional browser. Just don't hit it with 300K streaming real player stuff (with ADSL you will coz it is there). However 128K of streaming audio is no problem while browsing.
This machine was a complete dog with 98. W2k seems to be quicker on everything I have put it on. Even the kids PIII500Mhz really started to fly when off of 98 and on to W2k.

On the network cabling front check out maplin they do a kit (Sitecom - Network installation Kit 2) this gives 50m of cat5 tools plugs all for 25 quid so all you need do is get sockets.

No doubt one day I'll get a wireless card for the laptop (summer, the garden, Pimms, ADSL fantastic) in the meantime 100M round the house playing my jukebox of MP3s (currenlty at too many ripped CDs to count) is just fine).

Next plan is to connect one of the PCs to the HI-FI and never bother changing CDs again. All the audio files amongst us now go insane. Hey - I may sometimes go all old fashioned and stick on a CD or even a 12" bit of plastic.

Have fun - well I'm rambling now

ah right. Inspector

Oii check your posts who is rambling ? ? yes WE are.

ISPs what are they ?

W2K

I had left the older machine as a 95/98 as it was mainly used for games. It is now no longer used for that as the children have a Playstation2 . I would have thought my 266/64M machine would need more memory for W2K, but I try it out.
