Hi all

Right got a y piece today so figured several bolts should be no problem, WD40 the lot in the morning and give them a go tonight, well 1st one i meet and the bolt snaps, the one that goes onto the end can attached to the clamp and the shield.

Any suggestions on

1 how i get the bloody thing out of the clamp (the seperator bar seems pretty stuck there in the middle.

2 Where i can get a new bolt, and or anothe semi circular thing with a hole in so i can fit a normal bolt

All suggestions welcome, as i'm pulling out my last 3 hairs

Thanks in advance

Paul

I'm not quite sure which bolt is the problem, but suspect that it is one of the 3 smaller ones that hold the heat shield on. If so, drill it out (you might be better off removing the whole can/cat assembly from the bike - assuming this to be possible - you can disconnect the sensor cable under the tank) and use one of the other bolts to get a match from a local motor factors.

I take it you have an 1150 so im not sure which clamp has broken, assuming that the end can is simalar to my 1100, the clamp will either be, the one that holds the end can to the cat on a 1150. This one you can either cut off carefully with a hacksaw, or if you can remove the exhaust system from the bike and cut the bolt shaft in the middle of the clamp. Try long nose pliers to turn the bolt shaft, then try to free it off with taps from a mallet and small chisel. You can get new bolts and clamps from, Motor Works on 0845 458 0077/ motorworks.co.uk . If it is the clamp that holds the end can to the bike, try mole grips to turn the bolt shaft out, you could drill the bolt out but this will de tricky if done free hand. if that dosn't work its back to the hacksaw and buy a new one from above. When you fit the Y piece and new clamps/bolts etc, put copper grease on the joints and threads, this will stop the siezures in future.

If none of the above works and you are hairless, go have a pint!

Cheers guys

It was the one connecting the cat to the end can, just needed some ideas, i'm gonna cut it in half (the remaining stud) and remove the middle bit and try to fit a new bolt ground down at the top to fit the indent, thanks all very much for the suggestions.

bolt

when you refit the bolt cake EVERYTHING behind the sheild with copaslip. the first time it gets warm all residual will burn off and leave the threads inside the nut etc. well protected. Done this everytime mine is removed and had no problems in 28,000 miles (including winter). As a matter of course every bolt I remove and replace is copaslipped - it saves so much potential hassle in the long run
