BUFFETTING

Hello Folks.

I've fitted a set of Tobinators (R1150gs) and they have made a huge difference. Could someone tell me just how well I should expect them to perform? Having gone from buffetting that gave me blurred vision on the A3, I now have a fairly modest degree of noise. Is this normal, or should it be as quiet as a sensory-deprivation chamber?

BTW I think the GS is a stunning bit of kit all round.

Do a search on screens and you will find plenty of opinions. You will never get the perfect zone of silence your could expect on an RT for example - it's not that sort of bike - but options and non standard screens can make a world of difference.

Modest noise is good for a GS. I fitted an MRA to my 1100 which cut out a lot of buffeting but it's still fairly noisy. However... yesterday I had to take out the K100RS which is like being in the centre of a tornado. Suddenly realised that the GS isn't that bad after all.

just a quick tip, my gs1150 was in the middle screen position when I got it and it buffered badly I raised it to its highest and it was a bit better, while i was looking for an answer I put it on the lowest setting and it all went away and the wind was only slightly on the visor at 70(ish)
it wouldnt be the answer to many screen woes but it worked for me, I hadnt considered the low setting for a while and just put up with it as it was

Hi Philiphuw – as suggested by Onwalkabout, a search of the site will reveal what a perennial issue this. I fitted Tobinators to my 1100 (which requires using an 1150 screen) and it has made a big improvement to buffeting. Also +1 to Johnwhit on experimenting with setting the screen low – it keeps enough pressure off your chest to allow comfy M-way cruising, but leaves your head in smooth-flowing air. On low settings, the screen is also angled flatter, which smooths the airflow past it.

You’ll still get some wind whistle or roar past your lid though, which leads into the whole ‘quietest helmet’ debate. Tobinators allow a great range of adjustment for the 1150 screen, and once you start tweaking, you’ll end up keeping a couple of Allen keys in your jacket pocket in your quest for 70 mph tranquility. Perhaps you do this already!

You can always experiment with earplugs too of course. A very cheap way of making fast cruising a lot less tiring. My GS goes faster when I wear earplugs.
