I was poking around trying to find the connector for the hall sensors on the right hand side of the bike and I came across a bulb shaped thing attached to the wiring loom. It seems to be just hanging loose in the space under the coilpack.

What is it ? and should it be secured somewhere ?

:nenau

it may be for an option that your bike doesnt have?
is it doing any arm just hanging there?

Isn't that the blue three pin one under the seat ?

Depends what model of bike you have.
You haven't said if it's an 850/1100/1150, 1150 abs, non abs or servo abs so it's all a guess.

It's a 1997 R1100GS ABS.

No servo that I can see.

I thought the bulb shaped thing, might be some sort of tip switch or impact sensor?

I can't tell what part you're talking about from the picture you posted. But it maybe the plug for a lambda probe.
Some 97 bikes had them fitted.
If you haven't don't worry about it, tuck it back out of the way and forget about it.

I dug my spare loom out this evening. It had the same connector on it. With nothing to lose I prised the rubber top off it. It's some sort of connector (big round one with four pins in it. The plastic sides have a coarse thread in them so something is supposed to screw on to it.

Still none the wiser, I'll see if I can get some pictues up (not that it matters, it's not doing anything and will stay that way)

That's an early lambda plug socket.
Safe to ignore it.
